Paul opens with a father's warmth, urging Timothy to "fan into flame the gift of God" and reminding him that the Spirit gives us not timidity but power, love, and self-discipline. So Timothy shouldn't be ashamed of the gospel or of Paul's chains, but should share in its suffering, leaning on the God who saved us by His own grace—given in Christ before time began. The chapter ends with a charge that still echoes: guard the "good deposit," the precious truth of the gospel, with the help of the Holy Spirit.
