A Journey Through Philippians: Finding Joy in All Things

Paul exhorts us to have the same attitude as Jesus, who, though He was God, did not cling to His divine privileges. Instead, He humbled Himself completely, taking the nature of a servant and becoming obedient even to death on a cross. Because of this profound humility, God exalted Him to the highest place. This is our model. Paul encourages us to work out our salvation with reverence, knowing it is God who is at work in us. When we live this way, without grumbling or arguing, we "shine like stars in the universe."

Philippians 3: Pressing Toward the Goal

Paul issues a strong warning against placing confidence in the flesh—in things that make us look good by human standards. To illustrate his point, he lists his own remarkable achievements and religious pedigree. By any worldly measure, he was a spiritual success. Yet, he counts all of it as garbage compared to the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus.

The only righteousness that matters is the one that comes through faith in Christ. Having this, Paul's new ambition is to know Christ and the power of His resurrection. He encourages us to adopt this same mindset. We are to press on, forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead. We haven't arrived yet, but we are called to live up to what we have already attained in Christ, pressing on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called us heavenward.

Philippians 4: The Secret to Contentment

The final chapter opens with a simple, powerful command: "Rejoice in the Lord always." Paul shows how a life of rejoicing leads directly to the peace of God. He instructs us to not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, to present our requests to God with prayer and thanksgiving. The result is a peace that transcends all understanding, which will guard our hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.

We are also told to focus our thoughts on whatever is true, noble, right, pure, lovely, and admirable. Finally, Paul thanks the Philippian church for their generous gifts. He shares with them the secret to his contentment: he has learned to be content in any and every situation, whether well-fed or hungry. He knows he can do all things through Christ who gives him strength. He sees their gift not just as helping him, but as a "fragrant offering, an acceptable sacrifice, pleasing to God."
