“Therefore God again set a certain day, calling it Today, when a long time later he spoke through David, as was said before: “Today, if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts.” For if Joshua had given them rest, God would not have spoken later about another day” (Hebrews 4:7-8)

One of the most profound truths we discover when reading the Bible is how the New Testament reveals the spiritual fulfillment of events from the Old Testament. The stories are not just historical records; they are shadows pointing to a greater reality. The Israelites' journey into the promised land of Canaan is a powerful example of this. We must pay close attention to it, because it serves as a foreshadowing of our invitation to enter the true promised land of God—His rest.

The writer of Hebrews makes a striking point: the rest he is describing is not simply about settling in the land of Canaan. If Joshua had given the Israelites the ultimate, final rest, God would not have spoken through King David centuries later about "another day." David, writing in Psalm 95, saw a future rest that was still to come, one that would be accessed through faith in the Messiah, Jesus Christ.

A Rest Seen from Afar

David not only prophesied about this future rest but also looked forward to it personally. He understood the blessedness of the righteousness that Christ would provide, a righteousness credited to us not by our works, but through faith. In Psalm 32, David exclaims how blessed is the one whose sins are forgiven. The Apostle Paul explains this very concept in his letter to the Romans:

“David says the same thing when he speaks of the blessedness of the one to whom God credits righteousness apart from works: ‘Blessed are those whose transgressions are forgiven, whose sins are covered. Blessed is the one whose sin the Lord will never count against them.’” (Romans 4:6-8)

This is a beautiful truth. David, living under the Old Covenant, saw the promise of the New Covenant. He glimpsed the grace that would be fully revealed in Jesus. And because he saw this amazing truth, he was inspired by the Holy Spirit to give a timeless warning: when you hear God’s voice, do not harden your heart (Psalm 95:7-8). He urged his listeners not to be like the generation in the wilderness, who grew hard and insensitive to God. Instead, when we hear the offer of life, our response should be one of soft-hearted faith, accepting the good news of Christ which has the power to save.

Today is the Day

The author of Hebrews repeatedly quotes from Psalm 95 in chapters 3 and 4, emphasizing the critical importance of our heart's condition. The story of Israel is our example, but the invitation to enter God's rest is still available to us today. The very word "Today" is highlighted as the day of opportunity.

Joshua led the people into a physical land, but it was only a shadow of the true spiritual rest found in Jesus. As believers, we have the opportunity to secure this rest through faith. The promise is simple and clear: everyone who believes enters this rest (Hebrews 4:3). Thankfully, this offer has not expired. The only requirement is faith—a faith placed entirely in Jesus Christ. He is the true and complete Sabbath Rest that God has always promised His children.
