“Even though we speak like this, dear friends, we are confident of better things in your case—things that accompany salvation. God is not unjust; he will not forget your work and the love you have shown him as you have helped his people and continue to help them.” (Hebrews 6:9-10)

Salvation is more than just a ticket to heaven; it's the gateway to all the good things God has prepared for us. The moment we are born again, every promise God has made becomes ours as heirs of His kingdom. While the warnings in Hebrews 5 and 6 are strong, the writer's core message is an encouragement to move toward maturity, so we don't become complacent with the incredible gift of eternal life we’ve been given. He isn't suggesting his readers are in immediate danger of falling away. Instead, he uses this strong language to prepare them for deeper truths that require a solid spiritual foundation.

One of the beautiful things that accompanies salvation is access to divine knowledge and understanding. John explained this wonderfully when he wrote, “But you have an anointing from the Holy One, and all of you know the truth” (1 John 2:20). The word for “anointing” here is chrisma, which refers to an ointment or salve. It’s a powerful image: the Holy Spirit is like a healing ointment that covers believers, granting us the ability to grasp God’s truth and walk in His ways.

John continues a few verses later, “As for you, the anointing you received from him remains in you, and you do not need anyone to teach you. But as his anointing teaches you about all things and as that anointing is real, not counterfeit—just as it has taught you, remain in him” (1 John 2:27). We have the perfect teacher living within us, ready to unlock the scriptures and lead us into all truth. When we encounter something we don't understand, the Holy Spirit partners with us to bring revelation. This isn't just head knowledge; it’s a deep, internal illumination of our minds. This is one of the many vital roles of the Holy Spirit in a believer's life.

After his stern warning, the writer of Hebrews pauses to offer encouragement. He is confident of "better things" for his readers because he sees the evidence of their salvation. He reminds them that God is not unjust and sees their labor of love. Every act of service done for His name’s sake is noticed and remembered. We are Christ’s ambassadors on this earth, and when we act on His behalf, God sees it.

This is why the writer encourages them to persevere with diligence to the very end. “We want each of you to show this same diligence to the very end, in order to make your hope sure. We do not want you to become lazy, but to imitate those who through faith and patience inherit what has been promised” (Hebrews 6:11-12).

Through growing in knowledge, gaining spiritual insight, and persevering in faith, we lay hold of the hope we’ve been called to. The challenging words in scripture are not meant to discourage us but to spur us on. They call us to move forward in our understanding of God, because we can be confident that the best is always yet to come.
