“It was necessary, then, for the copies of the heavenly things to be purified with these sacrifices, but the heavenly things themselves with better sacrifices than these. For Christ did not enter a man-made sanctuary that was only a copy of the true one; he entered heaven itself, now to appear for us in God’s presence” (Hebrews 9:23-24)

I’ve always been fascinated by understudies in theater. They spend months learning every line, every movement, and every motivation of the star performer. They are a perfect copy, ready to step in at a moment's notice. But no matter how flawless their performance, the audience knows they are a stand-in for the star and the real opening night.

This is the exact picture the writer of Hebrews paints when describing the entire Old Testament sacrificial system. For centuries, the high priest would enter the Holy of Holies, a man-made sanctuary, to offer the blood of bulls and goats. It was a solemn, vital, and divinely commanded act. Yet, it was always just a dress rehearsal. Every ceremony, every sacrifice, was a shadow pointing to a future, ultimate performance. It was a copy of a heavenly reality.

Hebrews 9:23-24 pulls back the curtain on this grand production:

“It was necessary, then, for the copies of the heavenly things to be purified with these sacrifices, but the heavenly things themselves with better sacrifices than these. For Christ did not enter a man-made sanctuary that was only a copy of the true one; he entered heaven itself, now to appear for us in God’s presence.”

This is the pinnacle of history. The understudy has left the stage, and the star has made His entrance. Jesus didn't walk into a replica; He walked into reality. He entered heaven itself to stand before God the Father, not for Himself, but for us.

A Better Sacrifice

The old system, for all its importance, had built-in limitations. The sacrifices had to be repeated, year after year. This constant repetition was a powerful reminder that they were not the final solution. As Hebrews 10 explains, if those offerings could have truly cleansed people, they would have stopped. Instead, they served as an annual reminder of sin, a signpost pointing toward the One who would come and offer a perfect sacrifice, once for all.

This is where the work of Jesus becomes so profoundly beautiful. He didn’t enter a man-made temple patterned after the real thing. He stepped into the very presence of God in heaven. And the sacrifice He brought was not the blood of an animal, but something infinitely better: His own.

His sacrifice was not just another payment; it was the final payment.

• His blood was the entrance fee. It granted Him access to the heavenly sanctuary, not just as a visitor, but as the High Priest who had completed His work (Hebrews 9:12).

• His blood was the cleansing agent. It didn't just cover sin temporarily; it purified our consciences from the inside out, freeing us to serve the living God (Hebrews 9:14).

• His blood ratified the New Covenant. It was the seal on God’s promise, making the forgiveness of sins a permanent reality (Matthew 26:28).

• His blood bought our eternal redemption. This wasn’t a lease or a temporary pardon; it was a one-time purchase that secured our freedom forever (Hebrews 9:12).

This one act, offered in the very presence of God, accomplished everything the old system could only foreshadow. It undid the ruin of sin and reversed the power of death.

Appearing for Us

There is a small, easily overlooked phrase in this passage that carries immense weight: "now to appear for us in God’s presence."

Think about that. Jesus entered heaven not just to report His victory, but to begin His new role as our eternal representative. He stands before the Father on our behalf. When we falter, when we feel unworthy, when the accuser whispers our failures, Jesus is there, presenting His finished work. His presence is our eternal security.

This is why His blood gives us such incredible confidence. Because He is our representative, we can approach God's throne. We don’t have to be timid or fearful. We can draw near with boldness to find mercy and grace precisely when we need them most (Hebrews 4:16). His presence in heaven guarantees our access to the Father.

The entire sacrificial system was the long, elaborate setup for the moment when our High Priest would take His rightful place. His work on the cross made it all possible, and His position in heaven secures it for all time. He is now seated at the right hand of the Father, holding a position above all things, forever securing our reconciled place in God's family. The dress rehearsals are over. The true High Priest has entered the true sanctuary, and He is there for you.
