You've probably banked on something before—a relationship, a career, a plan—and watched it fall apart in a way you didn't see coming. That kind of disappointment has a way of making you cautious. You start holding back, protecting yourself, keeping your expectations low so you don't get hurt again.

Most of us carry some version of that into our relationship with God, too. We half-expect him to eventually let us down. So we keep a little distance, stay a little guarded, hedge our bets.

Paul speaks directly into that. "Anyone who trusts in him will never be put to shame." That's a sweeping promise, and it's worth actually landing on it.

He's not promising a life without hardship or difficulty. The gospel has never been about that. What this promise means is that when you anchor your life in Christ, your ultimate hope doesn't collapse when things go hard. Jeremiah painted a picture of it: a tree planted by the stream whose roots go deep, so that even in a drought its leaves stay green (Jeremiah 17:7-8). The drought still comes. The heat still comes. But the roots hold. King David put it this way: "The LORD redeems his servants; no one will be condemned who takes refuge in him" (Psalm 34:22). The refuge doesn't fail.

Then Paul says something that would've been genuinely shocking to his original audience: "there is no difference between Jew and Gentile." The dividing line that shaped the entire ancient world—gone. The same Lord is Lord of all, and he "richly blesses all who call on him." Paul had already said it elsewhere: "God does not show favoritism" (Romans 2:11). Peter came to the same conclusion: God is "no respecter of persons" (Acts 10:34).

That means God isn't evaluating you by your heritage, your social standing, your financial situation, or the sum total of your worst moments. If you've spent time feeling like you're on the outside—too far gone, too messy, too much history—this is for you. There's no VIP line in the kingdom. The door is open to everyone in the same way.

And the way in is almost disarmingly simple. "Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved." Calling on him doesn't mean having everything figured out. It's not a formal prayer with the right language. It's turning to him honestly, admitting you need him, and trusting that he's there. You don't have to clean up first. He already knows you completely and invites you to come as you are.

1. Are you keeping God at a distance, braced for disappointment?

2. What past failure are you using to tell yourself you're disqualified?

3. What would it actually take to call on him today?
