Staying On Fire for God—Romans 12:11
"Never be lacking in zeal, but keep your spiritual fervor, serving the Lord" (Romans 12:11)
There's a specific kind of tired that has nothing to do with your body. You still show up. You still read the chapter, still say the prayer, still do the thing you know a “good Christian” is supposed to do. But somewhere along the way the fire went out, and now you're just tending cold ashes and hoping nobody notices. The motions are all there. The heat isn't.
Paul saw that danger coming. So he leaves us this short, blazing command: never be lacking in zeal, but keep your spiritual fervor, serving the Lord. The King James calls it being "fervent in spirit." The Amplified stretches it further—"aglow and burning with the Spirit." That's not a polite spiritual ember. That's a fire with flames on it. And Paul insists it's meant to stay lit—not for a season, but for a lifetime.
How do you serve God for fifty years without burning out? Plenty of people start out aglow and end up gray. The answer isn't more effort. It's spiritual fervor—that steady flow of living by God's Spirit that keeps you seeking and serving him long after the initial excitement wears thin.
God didn't hand you a rulebook and wish you luck. He gave you the Holy Spirit as your guide, and he promised he would never leave you (John 14:16-18). Every believer already has the Holy Spirit living inside. The fire isn't something you have to manufacture. It's already there.
But you get to choose how much you flow with him. Neglect close fellowship with God and you'll drift—it's almost effortless. But live by the Spirit, and something wonderful happens: you lose your appetite for the things of the flesh (Romans 8:5). The pull weakens. The counterfeit stops satisfying.
Self-reliance is the real danger here. Try to power a lifetime of zeal with your own willpower and you will crash—not maybe, but eventually. The moment you grip the wheel, the focus shifts off God and onto you. Life becomes a yo-yo: sprint hard for God, get yanked back by the world, feel guilty, repeat until you're exhausted. That's not devotion. That's burnout dressed up as faithfulness.
Now picture the other way. You seek the Lord and stay stirred up—soaking in the Word, praying in the Spirit, keeping the conversation with God going all day. Slowly, serving him stops being a performance and becomes a lifestyle. Your fervor becomes the natural overflow of knowing God and walking with him. And a fire fed like that? Nothing can shake it.
So here's my prayer for you—especially for the version of you that feels coldest right now: may the Holy Spirit flow through you again, guiding your steps and breathing on the embers you thought had gone out. May he build you up until the fire catches and holds. And may you serve God out of love and not obligation, aglow and burning with his Spirit, all the days of your life. Amen.
