“You, then, why do you judge your brother or sister? Or why do you treat them with contempt? For we will all stand before God’s judgment seat. It is written: “‘As surely as I live,’ says the Lord, ‘every knee will bow before me; every tongue will acknowledge God.’” So then, each of us will give an account of ourselves to God.” (Romans 14:10-12)

Ever caught yourself managing someone else's walk with God like it was your project to finish? Mentally tracking their slip-ups. Rehearsing the little correction you'll deliver next time. It's exhausting—and Paul lands on this with a question that pops the whole thing like a balloon: "You, then, why do you judge your brother or sister?"

There's a strange kind of relief in realizing you were never responsible for turning everyone around you into the perfect Christian. You can teach. Encourage. Share what you've learned. Help someone get equipped for the road ahead. But what they finally do with all of it? That part's on them, not you. And honestly, laying that weight down frees you up to just love people instead of policing them.

We all answer to God in the end. Every last one of us. So instead of burning your days fretting over a brother or sister's choices about food or drink or a hundred other small things, the wiser move points inward. Are my motives clean? Is my heart right? Am I actually walking the road God laid out for me? Paul isn't saying you can't care about people. He's saying stop hauling around a load that was never yours to carry—and stop tripping others up while you drag it.

And here's something worth getting genuinely excited about. One day you'll stand before the Lord and confess that He is Lord—and for the believer, that's a good day, not a dreaded one. "Every knee will bow before me; every tongue will confess to God," Paul writes, echoing the great promise that one day everything in heaven and earth will bow to Jesus (Philippians 2:9-11). If you confess Him now, there's no terror waiting for you then. John explains exactly why: "love is made complete among us so that we will have confidence on the day of judgment... There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear" (1 John 4:17-18). You get to live for Him now, celebrate what He's done, and look ahead to the day you tell Him so to His face.

So it circles right back. Don't spend your one life confusing or condemning your brothers or sisters over freedoms they simply haven't grown into yet. Walk your own convictions with a clean heart, trust that God has accepted them too, and do everything—the big and the small—as unto the Lord.

Make up your mind today to build people up instead of tearing them down, and keep your own heart soft and honest before Him. That's a life with nothing to dread.
