"May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit." (Romans 15:13)

Do you overflow with hope? Not the polite, fingers-crossed kind—the kind that bubbles up and spills onto the people around you until they start to notice something's different about you. That kind of hope comes from one place: knowing God. He's the author of it. So the more you walk with Him, the more it rises up and runs over.

Jesus gave the woman at the well a picture of this. He offered her living water and said, "whoever drinks the water I give him will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life" (John 4:14). A spring, welling up—not a puddle you sip from once. And here's the thing about eternal life: if you're born again, you already have it right now (1 John 5:13). It's not just a ticket to heaven someday. Jesus defined it in John 17: "Now this is eternal life: that they may know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent" (John 17:3). It's knowing God so deeply that hope wells up inside you and can't be contained.

Paul prays that God would fill you "with all joy and peace as you trust in him." That word trust is key—trust gets learned and lived out over time. The longer you walk with the Lord, the more you know Him, and the more He fills you. Joy shows up first. Real joy is more than a good mood; it's the ability to stay content in any circumstance. Hebrews says Jesus was anointed "with the oil of joy" (Hebrews 1:9)—nobody was ever more full of joy than He was. And you're His child, so that same joy is meant for you.

Then comes peace. Peace is harmony in your relationships, sure, but it goes deeper. The word carries the idea of a treaty—hostilities ended, war over. As God fills you with His peace, you finally grasp that you're at peace with Him. He's not fuming at you over your sin. He doesn't look at you and see a filthy sinner. He sees you the way He sees Jesus (1 John 4:17).

Here's what makes all of this remarkable: it runs on a supernatural track, powered by the Holy Spirit living inside you. This hope isn't built on feelings. So a rough day, a heavy mood, a hard season—none of that gets to decide whether you have hope. God gave it to you, and it's yours. Keep walking with Him, and the anticipation just keeps building until it spills over into everything.

So today, let that sink in. My prayer for you is the same as Paul's—that you'd be filled to overflowing with the hope that's yours in Christ. May His joy and His peace pour into you as you spend time with Him, until you can't help but spill it onto everyone around you.
