“Now to him who is able to establish you in accordance with my gospel, the message I proclaim about Jesus Christ, in keeping with the revelation of the mystery hidden for long ages past, but now revealed and made known through the prophetic writings by the command of the eternal God, so that all the Gentiles might come to the obedience that comes from faith— to the only wise God be glory forever through Jesus Christ! Amen.” (Romans 16:25-27)

Some letters end with small talk. Others end with a to-do list. Paul ends Romans with worship.

After sixteen chapters of some of the richest writing ever put to paper—grace, being made right with God, the Spirit, Israel, the church, the nuts and bolts of life together—he lifts his eyes off the page and just breaks into praise. Not a neat little summary. A burst of wonder.

That's the sound of someone who has spent a long time sitting with a massive truth and, at the end of it all, can only say one thing: glory.

There's a precision here that's easy to blow right past. Paul calls the gospel a mystery "hidden for long ages past"—and then, in the very next breath, says it was made known "through the prophetic writings." That's not a contradiction. That's exactly how God works.

The gospel was never missing from the Old Testament. It was there in seed form, woven through the promises, the covenants, all those patterns of sacrifice and rescue. What stayed hidden was the full picture: that the Messiah would show up in the person of Jesus, that His death and resurrection would fulfill everything the prophets pointed toward, and that the blessing promised to Abraham would spill out beyond Israel to every nation on earth. That's the mystery now fully unveiled. Not brand new—just finally seen in full.

And here's a beautiful thing to hold onto: the same gospel that steadies your faith today was promised long before you drew your first breath, and it'll outlast everything you can currently see. You're standing inside a plan that stretches across the whole of human history.

Notice that opening word, too. Paul doesn't say the gospel merely informs you or comforts you. He says God is able to establish you by it. That word matters. To be established is to be rooted. Grounded. Set on something solid enough to hold you when your circumstances shift, when faith gets hard, when the noise around you drowns out the peace inside you.

This is what all of Romans has been driving toward. Paul opened this letter declaring the gospel is "the power of God for the salvation of everyone who believes" (Romans 1:16). Not a power reserved for the spiritual elite. Not a power that fizzles when life gets heavy. The ongoing, present-tense power of God, at work in every single person who trusts Christ. And now, at the very end, he circles right back to that same foundation—the gospel isn't just something you believed once. It's what keeps holding you, shaping you, sustaining you.

Then look how wide he throws the net. The gospel was revealed "so that all nations might believe and obey him." Not one people. Not one culture or background. Every nation. Every language. Every generation. This is the heart of God on full display in Christ—not some narrow rescue plan, but a sweeping announcement that nobody is beyond the reach of grace.

And at the very center of it: the only wise God. Not merely powerful, though He is. Not merely just, though He's that too. Wise—the One whose plan, unfolding across centuries of promise and shadow, comes to rest in a person, Jesus Christ, and in that simple, world-turning invitation to believe and obey.

So this is where Paul leaves us as Romans closes. Not with a checklist. With an invitation to wonder. Be established by this gospel. Let its roots go deeper. Give glory to the God who was wise enough to plan your redemption before time even began, and faithful enough to see it all the way through.
