"All who sin apart from the law will also perish apart from the law, and all who sin under the law will be judged by the law. 13 For it is not those who hear the law who are righteous in God’s sight, but it is those who obey the law who will be declared righteous.” (Romans 2:12-13)

There's a heavy, quiet burden a lot of us carry in our faith. It's the nagging sense that Jesus isn't quite enough—that we need Jesus plus something to really be okay with God. Jesus plus good works. Jesus plus flawless obedience. Jesus plus a checklist that never ends.

Live under that, and the covenants start to blur together. You end up with a strange hybrid faith where you trust Jesus to save you but then wear yourself out trying to earn His love with your performance.

A lot of that confusion comes from misreading passages like this one. At first glance, Paul seems to be saying you have to perfectly obey the Law to be declared righteous. But look closer and you'll see he's talking about obeying the righteousness of the Law (Romans 2:26-27; 3:21-22; 8:3-4)—which is a completely different thing.

What does that even mean? Well, just a couple verses later, Paul points out that Gentiles—people who were never given God's covenant—sometimes do by nature what the Law requires, because its truth is written on their hearts (Romans 2:14-15).

Think that through. If the "Law" Paul had in mind was the strict Jewish legal code, how could people who'd never heard of it somehow keep more than 600 specific commands, dietary rules and sacrifices included? They couldn't. Neither could you. Neither could I.

The ancient Jewish Law isn't the measuring stick God uses on the human heart today. Paul is pointing at the true intent behind the Law.

So if the point was never to earn our way in by keeping hundreds of rules, what was the Law actually for? Scripture gives us a clear, even beautiful picture. The Law was given to:

• Show us our sin. It holds up God's holiness and exposes how far we fall short (Romans 3:20; 7:7, 13).

• Stir up the sin in us. It surfaces the rebellion buried in our hearts (Romans 7:8-10; Galatians 3:19).

• Condemn our self-righteousness. It proves we can't save ourselves (Galatians 3:10, 23).

• Crucify our sin nature. It breaks our pride so we can actually live for God (Galatians 2:19-20).

• Lead us straight to Christ. It points us to our desperate need for a Savior (Galatians 3:24).

The Law was never a ladder to climb up to God. It was a mirror—showing us we could never earn right standing with Him on our own. It strips the pride away and leaves us reaching for mercy.

To truly "obey the Law," then, is to look exactly where the Law is pointing: at Jesus.

When we accept His sacrifice for our sin, the whole requirement of the Law gets fulfilled in us (Galatians 3:23-25). No more striving. No more performing. Nothing to bolt onto His finished work. By trusting Jesus, we satisfy the real intent of the Law, and we're declared righteous in God's sight.

You can set down the "Jesus plus" burden today. Stop grinding for a perfection you'll never reach on your own. Trust Jesus fully, rest in His grace, and let His love do the changing from the inside out.
