"In the past God spoke to our forefathers through the prophets at many times and in various ways, but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed heir of all things, and through whom he made the universe" (Hebrews 1:1-2)

I was recently watching a documentary about the deep sea. Scientists were exploring life at incredible depths, far beyond where sunlight can reach. For a long time, the assumption was that all life on our planet was sustained by the sun through photosynthesis. Yet, as they navigated these dark waters, they discovered life forms thriving in complete blackness, sustained by other means. This discovery was baffling and completely shifted a long-held scientific understanding.

Finding these creatures challenged the theory that life is solely dependent on our sun. For believers, this scientific discovery opens a door to a truth we have long understood: life is ultimately sustained by the Son. Jesus is the one who not only created the universe but also holds it all together by His powerful word. As the Apostle Paul wrote, "He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. For by him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible... all things were created by him and for him. He is before all things, and in him all things hold together" (Colossians 1:15-17).

These tiny life forms in the deep sea unknowingly testify to a profound spiritual reality. They point to the truth that Jesus created the universe, Jesus holds it together, and Jesus is the source of all life. The Apostle John beautifully stated, "Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. In him was life, and that life was the light of men" (John 1:3-4). To understand who Jesus is, is to find the beginning of true life, not just physically, but eternally. As Jesus himself promised, "I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full" (John 10:10).

Jesus Helps Us Understand God’s Nature

The Old Testament gave us a partial, yet vital, revelation of God's character. But it is in Jesus that we receive the clear and perfect image. He is the ultimate expression of God's love for us. The author of Hebrews captures this beautifully: "In the past God spoke to our forefathers through the prophets at many times and in various ways, but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son" (Hebrews 1:1-2).

Think about it: God has always been communicating with us. He sent messengers, prophets, and kings to reveal His heart and His intentions. Each one gave us a precious piece of the truth. Yet, we could not fully grasp God’s character through the limited revelation they could provide. So, God sent Jesus. He came to communicate the fullness of God's nature. "No one has ever seen God, but the one and only Son, who is himself God and is in closest relationship with the Father, has made him known" (John 1:18).

Jesus, the very person who created the universe and who sustains all life, was sent to personally reveal God’s love. Everything about Jesus shows us the Father in a complete way, allowing us to truly know and understand Him. We are told in 1 John 4:8 that "God is love." Love is not just an attribute God has; it is the very essence of His being. John goes on to explain how this love was demonstrated: "This is how God showed his love among us: He sent his one and only Son into the world that we might live through him. This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins" (1 John 4:9-10).

The Word Became Flesh

To fully communicate this message of love, Jesus had to enter our world. He took on humanity and became flesh. The Apostle John records this incredible moment: "The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth" (John 1:14).

He came into the world that He created, carrying a message that was both simple and glorious: God loves us and has provided a way for us to be reconciled to Him through His Son. Jesus came to proclaim the good news that God was not holding our sins against us. He Himself would be the bridge back to the Father.

The messengers God had previously sent could only forecast these events, and they longed to see them fulfilled. As Luke records, "For I tell you that many prophets and kings wanted to see what you see but did not see it, and to hear what you hear but did not hear it" (Luke 10:24). What did they long to see? They longed to see Jesus—the living, breathing expression of God's love in the flesh.

Even in the deepest parts of the sea, every creature draws its life from the Son. They serve as a constant, quiet testimony to the incredible message of God's love found in the person of Jesus Christ. He is the author of all things, and He willingly offers eternal life to anyone who calls upon His name. As Jesus prayed, "Now this is eternal life: that they may know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent" (John 17:3).

The message of Jesus is perfectly clear. He came to show us the Father and to reconcile the world to Himself (2 Corinthians 5:18-19). Because of Him, we are forgiven, accepted, and unconditionally loved. Through Jesus, we can finally see and know the true nature and character of God. By knowing Jesus, we know the Father.
