It’s one of the most fundamental questions of existence: where did everything come from? We look up at the stars, consider the vastness of the oceans, and marvel at the complexity of a single cell. Science offers theories, but faith provides a profound and personal answer.

The writer of Hebrews gives us this starting point: “By faith we understand that the universe was formed at God’s command, so that what is seen was not made out of what was visible” (Hebrews 11:3).

This is a statement of incredible power. It suggests that everything we can see, touch, and measure was brought into being from something unseen. It was spoken into existence. But there’s a deeper layer to this truth. It’s not just about what God did; it’s about how He did it—and what that teaches us about the nature of faith itself.

The Creative Power of Faith

When God spoke creation into existence, He was operating by faith. He believed His own words had the power to shape reality, to bring form to the formless and light to the darkness. This reveals a foundational principle of God's kingdom: faith has the power to bring what does not exist into existence (Romans 4:17).

This is an important lesson for us. The writer of Hebrews defines faith as "being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see" (Hebrews 11:1). The substance behind faith isn't something our five senses can confirm, but there is an undeniable certainty to it. That certainty comes from its source: the Word of God.

When we have a promise from God, we have the raw material for faith. This truth is mirrored in what Paul writes in Romans, that God "gives life to the dead and calls into being things that were not" (Romans 4:17). Speaking in faith is what unlocks the power to bring God's promises to pass in our own lives. It may feel strange to speak to a situation with authority, but that is precisely why faith is required.

A Word That Always Works

God instructed His Word to go and produce, and the universe is the result. He had complete confidence in His command. In the same way, we can have a profound confidence in the Word of God because it comes with an ironclad guarantee.

Consider the beautiful promise in Isaiah: "As the rain and the snow come down from heaven, and do not return to it without watering the earth and making it bud and flourish... so is my word that goes out from my mouth: It will not return to me empty, but will accomplish what I desire and achieve the purpose for which I sent it" (Isaiah 55:10-11).

God’s Word is not a collection of passive suggestions. It is active, creative, and purposeful. It is sent out with a mission, and it will not fail.

When we speak the Word of God over our circumstances, we are not just reciting empty phrases. We are aligning ourselves with the same creative power that formed the universe. We are taking the unseen reality of God's promise and, by faith, calling it into our visible world.

By faith, we understand that the cosmos was born from a command. And by that same faith, we can stand in our own lives, speak His promises, and trust that His Word will accomplish exactly what He sent it to do.
