“By faith Abraham, when God tested him, offered Isaac as a sacrifice. He who had received the promises was about to sacrifice his one and only son, even though God had said to him, “It is through Isaac that your offspring will be reckoned.” Abraham reasoned that God could raise the dead, and figuratively speaking, he did receive Isaac back from death” (Hebrews 11:17-19)

Have you ever waited years for a deeply held dream to come true? Imagine finally holding that long-awaited dream in your hands, only to feel like you are suddenly being asked to surrender it. It is a terrifying thought, and it goes against every instinct we have to protect what we love.

We see a profound example of this in the life of Abraham. At surface level, the story of Abraham being asked to sacrifice his son, Isaac, can feel deeply confusing today. Why would a loving God ask a father to give up the very child He promised?

When we explore this faith deeply, we uncover a beautiful truth about trust, surrender, and the incredible grace of God.

The Weight of the Promise

To understand the test, we first have to understand the journey. Abraham did not just want a son; he was carrying a massive promise from God. God had told him that he would be the father of a great nation, that his name would be great, and that the entire world would be blessed through his family line (Genesis 12:2-3).

God reaffirmed this covenant when Abraham was ninety-nine years old. He changed his name from Abram to Abraham, meaning "father of many nations," and promised that the covenant would continue specifically through a son named Isaac (Genesis 17:1-8). Against all physical odds, Sarah became pregnant. Isaac, the miracle child, was born.

Abraham had a long history of seeing God's truth unfold exactly as spoken. His faith was built on decades of connection with a faithful God. Because he believed, righteousness was credited to him (Genesis 15:6).

The Logic of Unwavering Faith

Then came the unimaginable test. God asked Abraham to offer his one and only son as a sacrifice.

How did Abraham find the courage to walk up that mountain? The writer of Hebrews gives us an incredible insight into Abraham's mind:

"By faith Abraham, when God tested him, offered Isaac as a sacrifice. He who had received the promises was about to sacrifice his one and only son... Abraham reasoned that God could raise the dead, and figuratively speaking, he did receive Isaac back from death" (Hebrews 11:17-19).

Abraham did not act out of blind, unthinking obedience. He reasoned. He looked at the impossible situation and did the math of faith. He knew two things to be absolutely true: God promised that the future of the world rested on Isaac's shoulders (Hebrews 6:13), and God cannot lie (Hebrews 6:18). Therefore, Abraham concluded that even if he sacrificed his son, God would simply have to raise him from the dead to keep His promise.

He was fully prepared to follow God’s instructions, no matter the cost, because he trusted the character of the Promise-Maker.

A Shadow of the Greatest Gift

As Abraham raised his knife, God stopped him. “Do not lay a hand on the boy,” He said. “Now I know that you fear God, because you have not withheld from me your son, your only son” (Genesis 22:12).

Here is a beautiful truth: this entire event was a striking shadow of what was to come. God tested Abraham to show the extent of his faith, but in doing so, God painted a picture of the gospel for us.

Abraham was willing to give up his one and only son, but God spared Isaac. Centuries later, God looked at a broken world and did not withhold His own Son. Jesus Christ became the ultimate sacrifice, dying to set us free. Abraham’s act of faith ensured the world would receive its blessing, and that blessing arrived in the person of Jesus. The scriptures tell us that God actually showed the gospel in advance to Abraham through this very journey (Galatians 3:8).

It is incredibly moving to realize that we are included in these wonderful promises today, all because a man chose to trust God when it made no sense.
