“By faith Moses, when he had grown up, refused to be known as the son of Pharaoh’s daughter.  He chose to be mistreated along with the people of God rather than to enjoy the pleasures of sin for a short time. He regarded disgrace for the sake of Christ as of greater value than the treasures of Egypt, because he was looking ahead to his reward” (Hebrews 11:24-26)

Walking away from a life of absolute luxury goes against every human instinct. Most people spend their entire lives chasing wealth, status, and comfort. Yet, one of the most striking moments in biblical history involves a man who had everything the world could offer and willingly left it all behind.

The writer of Hebrews captures this incredible decision:

“By faith Moses, when he had grown up, refused to be known as the son of Pharaoh’s daughter. He chose to be mistreated along with the people of God rather than to enjoy the pleasures of sin for a short time. He regarded disgrace for the sake of Christ as of greater value than the treasures of Egypt, because he was looking ahead to his reward” (Hebrews 11:24-26).

To understand the weight of this choice, we have to look at what Moses actually surrendered. As the adopted son of Pharaoh’s daughter, he held a position of supreme power. He had unlimited access to the riches of Egypt. In modern terms, he walked away from a royal title, a massive inheritance, and absolute political authority.

To the outside world, his decision seemed entirely absurd. But here is a beautiful truth: God will always reveal His deeper plans to a sensitive heart that is looking for Him.

Moses did not just feel sorry for the enslaved Israelites. The scriptures reveal something much deeper. He caught a glimpse of God's ultimate plan of salvation. He looked forward in faith to the promised Messiah. He considered the disgrace associated with Christ to be far more valuable than the finest treasures in Egypt. The temporary splendor of the world simply could not compare to the eternal riches of God's glory.

God deeply honored this incredible faith. During Moses' lifetime, God brought His ancient promises to life. As the Israelites groaned under their heavy slavery, they cried out for help.

“God heard their groaning and he remembered his covenant with Abraham, with Isaac and with Jacob. So God looked on the Israelites and was concerned about them” (Exodus 2:23-25).

God chose Moses as the very instrument to lead His people out of bondage. This historical Exodus serves as a brilliant picture of a much larger story. Just as God delivered the Israelites from physical slavery, Jesus Christ delivers us from the spiritual bondage of sin and death. Moses looked far into the future, saw the value of this redemptive work, and let it change the entire course of his life.

We are invited to share in this exact same faith today. You might find yourself facing a choice between temporary comfort and lasting spiritual truth. Take heart. The very same God who guided Moses is faithfully watching over your journey. You can trust that what He offers is always worth more than whatever you must leave behind.
