“Obey your leaders and submit to their authority. They keep watch over you as men who must give an account. Obey them so that their work will be a joy, not a burden, for that would be of no advantage to you” (Hebrews 13:17)

Think about a time you had to navigate a difficult, unfamiliar trail. If you were wise, you probably relied on a guide—someone who had walked the path before, understood the dangers, and knew exactly how to reach the destination safely. We willingly trust guides because we believe they have our best interests at heart.

Our spiritual journey operates in a very similar way. The writer of Hebrews offers a profound piece of guidance for this journey: “Obey your leaders and submit to their authority. They keep watch over you as men who must give an account. Obey them so that their work will be a joy, not a burden, for that would be of no advantage to you” (Hebrews 13:17).

At first glance, words like "obey" and "submit" can feel heavy or uncomfortable in our modern culture. We value independence. But when we look closer at the original language, a beautiful truth emerges. The word used for "obey" in this passage is peithō. It does not mean blind, forced compliance. Instead, it means to be persuaded, to trust, or to be convinced by the words spoken. In the book of Acts, this same word is used when people heard the message of Jesus and were gently persuaded to believe.

One of the most striking things about this passage is how it frames the role of our spiritual leaders. Their primary function is not to control us, but to lovingly persuade us with the truth. They are commissioned to teach the Word of God so that we will listen, trust it, and allow it to transform our lives.

When a leader teaches the Word of God with authenticity and care, and we receive it with an open heart, it creates a beautiful partnership. We begin to mature, and the truths of scripture become evident in our daily lives. In return, this brings immense joy to those who lead us. They get to witness the incredible fruit of their hard work and dedication.

This is exactly why the scriptures encourage us to hold faithful leaders in high regard. Hebrews 13:7 reminds us to, “Remember your leaders, who spoke the word of God to you. Consider the outcome of their way of life and imitate their faith.” We are invited to look at the landscape of their lives and allow their faith to inspire our own. Similarly, Paul writes in 1 Thessalonians to respect those who work hard among us and to hold them in the highest regard in love.

God has ordained leaders in the church to act as faithful guides, helping us mature and providing an example to live by. By receiving the Word of God taught by our leaders, we are trusting their guidance and making their heavy responsibility a true joy.
