“For this reason he had to be made like his brothers in every way, in order that he might become a merciful and faithful high priest in service to God, and that he might make atonement for the sins of the people” (Hebrews 2:17)

It is no small thing that Jesus stepped into humanity. This was not a casual decision or a minor adjustment. Philippians tells us that He "emptied himself," setting aside His divine privileges to be born as one of us. He did this for a very specific reason: to give us a helping hand. He saw that we were powerless to rescue ourselves, trapped by sin and its devastating effects. So, He became like us in every way.

By becoming a man, Jesus accomplished two critical things. First, He became able to truly empathize with our human experience, a vital quality for a High Priest. Second, He positioned Himself to make the ultimate atonement for our sins. This dual role is central to understanding the help He offers.

A New and Better Priesthood

In the Old Testament, the high priest served as the intermediary between God and the people. He would make atonement for their sins, but this process had limitations. Because the high priest was also a man who sinned, he first had to offer a sacrifice for himself before he could offer one for the people. This ritual happened year after year, a constant and somber reminder of sin's presence. The blood of animals could only cover sin, pointing forward to a better promise.

When Christ came, His sacrifice did something radically different. His blood did not just cover our sins; it washed them away completely. There is a profound difference between covering a stain and removing it entirely. As our High Priest, Jesus cleansed us from sin's power and freed us from its grasp. He went even further, performing a divine exchange. As Paul wrote, "God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God" (2 Corinthians 5:21). He took our sin upon Himself so that we could stand before God clothed in His perfect righteousness.

A Priest Who Can Empathize

As if that were not enough, Jesus is able to identify with us on a deeply personal level because He lived the human experience. He faced trials and temptations during His time on earth, yet He never once gave in to sin. This is marvelous news for us.

The writer of Hebrews explains it this way:

"Therefore, since we have a great high priest who has ascended into heaven, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold firmly to the faith we profess. For we do not have a high priest who is unable to empathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are—yet he did not sin." (Hebrews 4:14-15)

Jesus knows what it feels like to be tired, hungry, and grieving. He understands the sting of betrayal and the weight of sorrow. Because He has walked this path, He is not a distant, unfeeling deity. He is a merciful and faithful High Priest who truly understands our struggles.

This truth is not just for our comfort; it is an invitation to action. The very next verse urges us, "Let us then approach God’s throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need" (Hebrews 4:16).

Your Invitation to the Throne of Grace

Because Jesus serves as our High Priest, He makes constant intercession for us and gives us direct access to God. Since He both cleanses us from sin and empathizes with our weakness, we can approach God with bold confidence, not timid fear. When we come to Him, we will always find mercy for our failings and grace for our struggles. Jesus makes this possible.

His work is secure and permanent. Because He rose from the dead and lives forever, His priesthood never ends.

"But because Jesus lives forever, he has a permanent priesthood. Therefore he is able to save completely those who come to God through him, because he always lives to intercede for them. Such a high priest truly meets our need—one who is holy, blameless, pure, set apart from sinners, exalted above the heavens." (Hebrews 7:24-26)

This is why it was essential for Jesus to become a man. He had to be made like us in every way, so He could be the merciful and faithful High Priest we so desperately needed—one who could not only save us but also understand us.
