“Since the children have flesh and blood, he too shared in their humanity so that by his death he might destroy him who holds the power of death—that is, the devil— and free those who all their lives were held in slavery by their fear of death” (Hebrews 2:14-15)

Growing up, news of plane hijackings seemed almost common. A friend of mine was even on a plane that was hijacked and diverted to Cuba. He was on his way to basic training, and suddenly, he was a hostage. This story, though frightening, offers a powerful picture of a spiritual reality. Hostages are taken to create negotiating power; their lives are used as bargaining chips.

For a long time, humanity was in a similar position. Satan held mankind captive to sin and death, creating a state of fear and separation from God. Romans 5:6 describes our condition perfectly: “You see, at just the right time, when we were still powerless, Christ died for the ungodly.” Jesus saw our helpless state and made a radical choice. He stepped into our humanity, not as a distant observer, but as a direct participant. The moment He left the glories of heaven to become a man, He entered the territory of the enemy. He willingly became a hostage to rescue us.

Disarming Death from the Inside

Jesus’ mission was precise and powerful. He came to destroy the one who held the power of death. The apostle John confirms this, stating, “The reason the Son of God appeared was to destroy the devil’s work” (1 John 3:8b). He accomplished this by trading His life for ours. He became the payment for our sins, but that was only part of the strategy. His death satisfied the justice of God, but it was His resurrection that shattered the power of the enemy.

How did Jesus defeat the devil? By rising from the grave. When Jesus died, He paid the price for sin. When He rose, He broke the authority of the one who used death as a weapon. The resurrection is our proof that the rescue mission was a complete success. Death could not hold Him. David foresaw this victory centuries earlier when he prophesied, “because you will not abandon me to the realm of the dead, nor will you let your faithful one see decay” (Psalm 16:10). David could look forward with hope because he understood that death was not the final chapter.

The brilliance of God’s redemption plan is stunning. When Jesus was hanging on the cross, the powers of darkness must have thought they had won. But what they perceived as their greatest victory was actually the beginning of their ultimate defeat. The cross was the very instrument of their overthrow, but they were blind to it. Paul explains, “None of the rulers of this age understood it, for if they had, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory” (1 Corinthians 2:8). Once death took hold of Jesus, the trap was sprung. The divine life within Him was too powerful to be contained. When He rose, He ascended victoriously, leading a host of captives free.

The Power of a Public Spectacle

My friend who was taken to Cuba shared that once the plane landed, the hijackers were swiftly dealt with by local authorities. The threat was eliminated. The passengers were then treated with kindness until they could be returned home. Even though they were in a foreign, and at the time hostile, country, they were safe because their captors had been defeated.

This provides a wonderful illustration of our spiritual reality. Jesus defeated death and disarmed the spiritual authorities that held us captive. Colossians 2 gives us a vivid picture of this triumph:

“When you were dead in your sins… God made you alive with Christ. He forgave us all our sins, having canceled the charge of our legal indebtedness, which stood against us and condemned us; he has taken it away, nailing it to the cross. And having disarmed the powers and authorities, he made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them by the cross.” (Colossians 2:13-15)

Jesus didn't just win a private victory; He made a public announcement. As He ascended through the heavens, He paraded the defeated powers before all of creation, showcasing them as conquered and powerless. Every accusation that stood against us was nailed to His cross and left there.

We Have Been Set Free

This is the amazing truth we get to live in: we have been set free. The fear of death no longer needs to hold us in slavery. We know that Jesus confronted death head-on and emerged victorious. His victory is now our victory. By accepting the truth of what He has done, we know that we too will rise again and live forever with Him.
