Jesus is the Source of Your Salvation—Hebrews 5:9-10

Written by Juli Camarin
“and, once made perfect, he became the source of eternal salvation for all who obey him and was designated by God to be high priest in the order of Melchizedek” (Hebrews 5:9-10)

There is a finality in the words Jesus spoke from the cross: “It is finished.” We often hear these words and understand them as the end of His suffering. But they carry a weight far greater than that. They were a declaration of completion. Everything He came to do, everything prophesied about Him, and the entire work of redemption for the world was accomplished in that moment.

Because the mission was complete, Jesus ascended into heaven and sat down. This act of sitting is profoundly significant. It signifies a finished work. He took His rightful place at the right hand of the Father, not as a temporary guest, but as the ruling and reigning Lord (Mark 16:19; Hebrews 1:3). It is an important truth to grasp that Jesus is Lord whether we acknowledge it or not. As Peter declared at Pentecost, “God has made this Jesus, whom you crucified, both Lord and Christ” (Acts 2:36). His position is a fact, established by God Himself.

Through one perfect act of obedience, Jesus was uniquely equipped to become our High Priest. He became both the author and the very source of our salvation.

The Wellspring of Eternal Life

Everything we experience as human beings is finite. We are bound by time and space. Our days have beginnings and ends. Our energy wanes, requiring us to rest and refuel. In light of this, the concept of an eternal salvation can be difficult to fully comprehend.

Yet, this is precisely what Jesus offers. He is the source. This means salvation originates with Him, flows from Him, and is sustained by Him. He isn't just a guide who points to a distant well; He is the well.

We see a beautiful picture of this in His conversation with the woman at the well in Samaria. He told her, “Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks the water I give him will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life” (John 4:13-14). This is such an encouraging truth. Once you partake in the life Jesus offers, He provides the endless supply to sustain you. The wellspring He places within you never runs dry because He is its infinite source.

A Priesthood That Never Ends

Our confidence in this eternal supply is anchored in the nature of Jesus's priesthood. God designated Him a High Priest "in the order of Melchizedek," a detail that guarantees its permanence.

The Levitical priests of the Old Testament, while important, were limited. Their ministry was based on ancestry and ultimately cut short by death. But Jesus’s priesthood is different. It is not based on a human regulation but on “the power of an indestructible life” (Hebrews 7:16). When Jesus rose from the dead, He broke the power of death forever. He can never die again (Romans 6:9).

Because He lives forever, He holds a permanent priesthood. This is the heart of our assurance.

“Now there have been many of those priests, since death prevented them from continuing in office; but because Jesus lives forever, he has a permanent priesthood. Therefore he is able to save completely those who come to God through him, because he always lives to intercede for them.” (Hebrews 7:23-25)

His ability to save is not partial or temporary. It is complete. He is always living and always interceding for you. While the old law appointed weak men as priests, God appointed His Son, who has been made perfect forever (Hebrews 7:28).

Guaranteed by an Oath

As if the indestructible life of Jesus wasn't assurance enough, God added something else to solidify our hope. He made a promise with an oath.

“And it was not without an oath! Others became priests without any oath, but he became a priest with an oath when God said to him: ‘The Lord has sworn and will not change his mind: ‘You are a priest forever.’’ Because of this oath, Jesus has become the guarantee of a better covenant.” (Hebrews 7:20-22)

God swore that Jesus's priesthood would be eternal, and He will not change His mind. This makes Jesus the personal guarantee of a better way to connect with God.

Understanding this role is not just an interesting theological exercise; it's a truth that can bring deep encouragement to your soul. Your salvation is not hanging by a thread. It is anchored to the Son of God, who was made perfect through His obedience, who lives forever by the power of an indestructible life, and whose position as your High Priest is guaranteed by the unbreakable oath of God Himself. He is the source, and His supply will never, ever run out.
