“During the days of Jesus’ life on earth, he offered up prayers and petitions with loud cries and tears to the one who could save him from death, and he was heard because of his reverent submission. Although he was a son, he learned obedience from what he suffered” (Hebrews 5:7-8)

On this side of the cross, we often focus so heavily on the sacrifice of Jesus that we forget a crucial, beautiful truth: Jesus had a choice.

It is easy to imagine the events of the gospel unfolding like a script that had to be followed, with Jesus as a passive participant in a divine play. But the reality is far more profound. Jesus wasn't forced to redeem humanity. He wasn't coerced into the role of Savior. He faced the same option that was placed before Adam in the garden: to choose God’s will or to choose self.

Adam chose self, plunging the world into a pattern of brokenness and separation. Humanity desperately needed someone to intervene, but that intervention had to be voluntary. This is why Jesus stepped forward. He didn't just accept the role; He volunteered for it (1 Peter 1:20).

The Freedom of Divine Love

One of the most consistent attributes of God is that He values freedom. He is big on giving choices and letting us decide for ourselves. He does not force His will on us, and in the same way, He did not force His plan for redemption on Jesus.

This is a mystery that is hard for our minds to grasp. God and Jesus are one—existing in perfect unity alongside the Holy Spirit. Yet, within that unity, there was a distinct choice made. Jesus, being the "exact representation" of God's being (Hebrews 1:3), shares God's heart. Scripture tells us that God is not willing that any should perish (2 Peter 3:9). Because this is the Father’s heart, it is the Son’s heart too.

The plan from the very beginning was Jesus. Before the foundations of the world were laid, He had already decided to be the lamb (Revelation 13:8). But this wasn't a tragic theft of life. As Jesus told his disciples:

“The reason my Father loves me is that I lay down my life—only to take it up again. No one takes it from me, but I lay it down of my own accord.” (John 10:17-18)

The Restraint of Power

The grace of God becomes even more overwhelming when you realize that Jesus could have backed out at any moment.

Picture the scene in the Garden of Gethsemane. The betrayal is happening. Soldiers are approaching. In a moment of panic, Peter draws his sword to defend his Lord. But Jesus stops him with a statement that reveals just how much control He actually had.

“Do you think I cannot call on my Father, and he will at once put at my disposal more than twelve legions of angels? But how then would the Scriptures be fulfilled that say it must happen in this way?” (Matthew 26:53-54)

Jesus wasn't trapped. He could have spoken a single word, and heaven would have emptied itself to rescue Him. He knew God would honor that request. But He also knew the cost. If He saved Himself, He couldn't save us. So, He actively chose to stay. He chose the chains, the trial, and the cross because He was choosing you.

Learning Obedience Through Tears

The author of Hebrews gives us a rare, intimate glimpse into Jesus’ emotional life during this time. It says He offered up prayers with "loud cries and tears."

Jesus’ suffering wasn't just the physical torture of the cross, as horrific as that was. His true suffering was the spiritual weight of sin and the agonizing anticipation of being separated from the Father. He was about to become the very thing He hated—sin itself—so that we could be made righteous (2 Corinthians 5:21).

In Gethsemane, we see the humanity of Jesus wrestling with this reality. He was distressed to the point of death. He prayed, “Abba, Father, everything is possible for you. Take this cup from me. Yet not what I will, but what you will” (Mark 14:36).

This is where He "learned obedience." It doesn't mean He was disobedient before; it means He experienced the cost of obedience in a way that only suffering can teach. He felt the full weight of the temptation to escape, yet He submitted.

The Choice Is Now Yours

Because Jesus honored God’s request and endured the cross, the work is finished. He breathed His last, the temple curtain tore, and the barrier between God and man was removed (Luke 23:44-46).

Now, Jesus has been exalted to the highest place. He is our eternal High Priest, the source of salvation for all who trust in Him. He made His choice. He chose obedience. He chose love. He chose us.

And now, the circle comes back to us. God still offers a choice. He has done all the heavy lifting; the work of salvation is complete and offered as a free gift. But consistent with His nature, He will not force it upon you.

“Yet to all who received him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God.” (John 1:12)

Jesus chose you. The question that remains is, will you choose Him?
