"I am obligated both to Greeks and non-Greeks, both to the wise and the foolish. That is why I am so eager to preach the gospel also to you who are in Rome." (Romans 1:14-15)

There's a striking before-and-after in Paul's life. Before Jesus, he was a Pharisee—a man who felt duty-bound to tell everyone else exactly how to live. And the religious leaders of his day were experts at it, piling extra rule on top of extra rule until the Jewish Law became a weight no ordinary person could carry. Jesus called them out on it directly: "You nullify the word of God by your tradition that you have handed down" (Mark 7:13).

Knowing that background is what makes Paul's turnaround so stunning. One encounter with Jesus, and his entire worldview came apart and got rebuilt around grace.

The man who used to burden people with impossible rules suddenly wanted one thing—for everyone to actually know Jesus. He now felt obligated, yes, but to a completely different mission: to bring the good news to all people, everywhere. Same intensity, brand-new direction.

The gospel took a man proud of his own spiritual résumé and turned him into someone glad to throw the whole thing out for Christ. Listen to how he says it:

"But whatever were gains to me I now consider loss for the sake of Christ. What is more, I consider everything a loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, for whose sake I have lost all things. I consider them garbage, that I may gain Christ and be found in him, not having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law, but that which is through faith in Christ—the righteousness that comes from God on the basis of faith" (Philippians 3:7-9).

That's what the gospel does. It takes people who are trying so hard and still falling short, and turns them into people who simply surrender and gain everything.

Jesus changed Paul from the inside out. All that fierce energy he'd once poured into enforcing the law got redirected into building up the early church. Where he once felt obligated to uphold a crushing system, he now felt a glad, willing obligation to share Christ with anyone who'd listen.

And here's the encouraging part for you: this same gospel can do the same work in you, right now. It doesn't matter where your story started or how heavy your past feels—the good news carries the power to make you an entirely new creation (2 Corinthians 5:17). The rest of Paul's letter is basically a map for that discovery, inviting all of us to step out of exhausting effort and into the freedom of simple faith.
