"the gospel he promised beforehand through his prophets in the Holy Scriptures..." (Romans 1:2)

Read through the book of Acts and you'll notice Paul is almost always defending himself. Crowds, religious leaders, Roman officials, even the original disciples—he's constantly explaining his message to people who don't trust it yet. The gospel he preached sounded so different from what everyone expected that the natural reaction was suspicion.

But here's the thing worth holding onto: the gospel Paul preached wasn't new. It was promised all the way through the Scriptures.

That's a hard idea to wrap your mind around, and I'd bet it was hard for Paul at first, too. He tells us he once considered himself flawless when it came to religious rule-keeping (Philippians 3:6). He knew the law backward and forward. He spent his days making sure every box was checked. A lot of us know that instinct—so focused on our own performance that we miss the bigger picture entirely.

And then Paul met Jesus.

Sit with how disorienting that must have been. Suddenly all those laws and prophecies he'd studied for years started clicking into place. Everything he'd misread while trying so hard to be perfect got flooded with light. It shook him so deeply that he took off for the Arabian desert and spent three years there just working it all out (Galatians 1:11-12, 17-18).

I love picturing that. Paul, alone in the quiet, going line by line through the ancient texts, holding the old promises up against this new reality named Jesus. That slow, careful wrestling is what eventually gave him the nerve to tell the Romans, "I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God..." (Romans 1:16a). His eyes were finally open. The law and the prophets had been pointing at one thing the whole time—Jesus.

Jesus was always the plan.

The gospel isn't a plot twist. It sits at the very center of everything, past and present and future, and it's "the power of God that brings salvation to everyone who believes" (Romans 1:16b). This is the exact good news Paul says he was set apart to carry from birth (Romans 1:1).

If that stirs something in you, go dig for yourself this week. These passages show how Jesus was God's plan long before any of us showed up:

• Genesis 3:15 — God promised a Redeemer in the garden, right after everything fell apart.

• 1 Peter 1:18-20 — Jesus, the Lamb chosen before the world was made.

• Revelation 13:8 — the Lamb slain from the creation of the world.

• 2 Timothy 1:9-10 — grace given to us in Christ before time began.

• Titus 1:1-3 — eternal life promised in Christ before the ages started.

• Ephesians 1:4 — God chose us in Christ before He made the world.

• Hebrews 10:1 — the law, a shadow always pointing forward to Jesus.

• John 5:39-40 — Jesus saying the Scriptures themselves testify about Him.

So when you open your Bible, you're not flipping through a rulebook or a history file. You're following the story of a Savior who was planned for you from before the beginning.

1. Where in your own past can you now see God working, even in seasons you thought were pointless at the time?

2. Is there a part of Scripture you've written off as "just rules"—and what might shift if you looked for Jesus in it instead?

3. What's one promise from God's word you could carry with you today, the way you'd tuck a note in your pocket?
