"Because of this, God gave them over to shameful lusts. Even their women exchanged natural sexual relations for unnatural ones. In the same way the men also abandoned natural relations with women and were inflamed with lust for one another. Men committed shameful acts with other men, and received in themselves the due penalty for their error." (Romans 1:26-27)

Here's a truth woven right into how the world works: things run best when they operate the way their maker intended. Push past those boundaries, and the results tend to get painful and confusing fast.

Back at the beginning, God created humanity on purpose and with purpose. He made male and female and gave us the gift of marriage—a blessing meant to give human life a stable, flourishing foundation (Genesis 1:27-28; 2:22-24). It was a masterpiece: relationship, intimacy, and order all fitting together perfectly.

And yet, so much of human history is really the story of us trying to rewrite the instructions.

Paul digs into this in Romans. He points out that humanity chose to swap the truth of God for a lie (Romans 1:25). And underneath that swap sits one quietly devastating belief—that we know what's best for us better than our Creator does.

Buy into that lie, and everything gets turned upside down. Paul shows how rejecting God's design distorts our lives, describing people who exchanged natural relations for unnatural ones, stepping away from the Creator's original intent for our relationships (Romans 1:26-27).

But it's really important to read this in its full context. Paul isn't singling out one particular struggle to shame one particular group. He's painting a sweeping picture of universal human brokenness. Look at the surrounding verses—idolatry, godlessness, wickedness (Romans 1:18, 23), stacked right alongside a long list that includes murder, envy, gossip, even disobeying parents (Romans 1:29-30).

Every one of us is in this story. All of us, in our own way, have traded God's truth for our own desires. All of us have stepped off the path He designed.

And choices carry consequences. Paul says that in abandoning God's order, humanity was handed over to its own desires and felt the fallout of walking away from the truth (Romans 1:24-27). Think of it like gravity. Gravity isn't a cruel punishment—it's just how the world works. Step off a ledge and the painful landing isn't God being harsh; it's the natural result of ignoring a real law. In the same way, when we step outside the moral and spiritual boundaries God set up to protect us, we end up feeling it—emotionally, spiritually, physically. Sin fractures our peace. That's just what it does.

But here's the beautiful part: God's answer to our brokenness isn't to shove us away. It's to offer us a road home.

He loves every person equally, no matter what specific struggles or sins we're carrying. Restoration is His whole business. Wherever your journey has taken you, however far off you feel you've drifted, God is holding out an invitation of grace to you right now.

He gives us the freedom to pick our own path, but oh, how He longs for us to choose Him. As Scripture puts it: "This day I call heaven and earth as witnesses against you that I have set before you life and death, blessings and curses. Now choose life, so that you and your children may live" (Deuteronomy 30:19).

Today, you get the chance to step back into your Creator's loving design. Let His restoring work reach your heart. Choose grace. Choose Him. Choose life.
