Doing Right Because It's Right—Romans 13:3-5
"For rulers hold no terror for those who do right, but for those who do wrong. Do you want to be free from fear of the one in authority? Then do what is right and you will be commended. For the one in authority is God’s servant for your good. But if you do wrong, be afraid, for rulers do not bear the sword for no reason. They are God’s servants, agents of wrath to bring punishment on the wrongdoer. Therefore, it is necessary to submit to the authorities, not only because of possible punishment but also as a matter of conscience." (Romans 13:3-5)
There's a difference between behaving because you might get caught and behaving because something in you has actually changed. Paul is after the second one.
A lot of people follow rules purely to dodge consequences. Nothing wrong with avoiding a ticket. But that's not the deepest reason a follower of Jesus lives well. Our good behavior is supposed to flow from the inside out, from a heart that knows right from wrong and chooses right anyway, even when no one's watching.
Paul reminds us why authority even exists. God set up civil leaders to do two jobs. Yes, they punish wrongdoing, and that keeps society from unraveling. But that's not their main purpose. Their main purpose is to do you good, to create the kind of laws that protect and benefit ordinary people. When you live at peace within that framework, you earn respect from both people and God.
And this is exactly why voting matters so much. A lot has shifted over the last few decades. Our laws tend to mirror the values of the people who make them, and those values drift. When we stay engaged instead of checking out, we actually get a voice in the direction things go. That's not a small thing to hand away out of frustration or apathy.
So live in a way that's above reproach. Not because you're scared of getting caught, but because it's who you've become. Stay involved. Vote with care. And remember the freedoms you enjoy came at a real cost.
