Why Fighting the Rules Feels Like Fighting God—Romans 13:2

Why Fighting the Rules Feels Like Fighting God—Romans 13:2

Written by Juli Camarin
"Consequently, whoever rebels against the authority is rebelling against what God has instituted, and those who do so will bring judgment on themselves." (Romans 13:2)

This verse has some teeth. Paul isn't gently suggesting we cooperate. He's saying that when we set ourselves against legitimate authority, we're pushing back against something God Himself put in place. That's a sobering way to look at rebellion.

Think of it as an order to life. God built structure into the world on purpose. Courts, laws, civil authority, all of it exists to keep the peace and protect ordinary people. Is it perfect? Not even close. But a messy system that keeps some order still beats the alternative, which is everyone doing whatever they want to whoever they want.

Here's a picture that makes it click. Say you're driving down the highway and you pass three police cars in one afternoon. If you're going the speed limit, you barely notice them. No knot in your stomach, no glance in the rearview mirror. But the moment you're flying past them fifteen over? Suddenly you're watching that mirror like a hawk. That anxiety isn't the officer's fault. It's the natural weight of knowing you're on the wrong side of the line.

Paul already told us back in the last chapter to do what's right and live at peace with everyone (Romans 12:17-18). When your choices line up with what's good, that low hum of fear just disappears. There's a real freedom in a clear conscience. Paul says it plainly a few verses later: we submit "not only because of possible punishment but also because of conscience" (Romans 13:5).

So here's the invitation. Instead of living with one eye over your shoulder, live in the open. Thank God for the freedoms you have. Pray they hold for the next generation. And walk through your days without that shadow of fear hanging over you.

A Few Honest Questions:

  1. Where in your life are you living with a nagging fear that comes from cutting corners?

  2. Is there an area where you're resisting authority more out of pride than principle?

  3. What would a truly clear conscience free you up to do?

Does your faith stay tucked away in quiet moments, or does it shape how you move through an ordinary Tuesday? In Romans 13, Paul brings the gospel out of the sanctuary and into the streets. This 10-page guide written by Juli Camarin walks you through his practical, challenging call to let the character of Christ shape every corner of your daily life.

Paul gives us a picture worth pausing over: clothe yourself with Jesus, the way you'd put on a familiar coat each morning. That means submitting to the governing authorities, showing respect where it's due, and treating the people around you with genuine love. It's easy to imagine faith as something private, but Paul insists it spills into how we live among others. Then he sounds a gentle alarm—wake up from spiritual slumber. Live as children of light. Our whole duty, he says, can be summed up in one beautiful command: love your neighbor. This chapter invites you to stop drifting and start living wide awake, letting love become the way you serve the Lord in the everyday.

Whether you're a longtime believer or simply searching, this guide meets you right where you are and invites you to look closer.
