Justified by Faith—Romans 3:28
"For we maintain that a person is justified by faith apart from the works of the law." (Romans 3:28)
Every now and then I get to sit with a small group of folks who are new to our church. One of my favorite icebreakers is simple: "Tell us a little about your faith journey." It's a warm way to hear someone's story and get a feel for where they've been.
But over the years I've noticed something curious. When people answer, a lot of them launch into a résumé. The committees they served on. The rules they kept. The traditions they held to. And somewhere in all of it, their actual relationship with Jesus barely gets a mention.
And here's the uncomfortable part—how often do the rest of us do the very same thing?
For so many of us, the things we do for God crowd into the center of the frame. Underneath it runs a quiet assumption: that our good deeds and religious effort are what make us acceptable to Him.
Paul confronts that head-on. Writing to people who were straining to live by strict traditions and rules, he drops a principle that still lands today: we're made right with God by faith, not by works.
That's the heart of it. God did in Jesus exactly what we could never pull off ourselves. The moment we put our full faith in Him, we're justified—and it has nothing to do with the Law, our behavior, or our spiritual résumé. Paul spent the opening chapters of Romans proving we can't save ourselves. Now he brings it all to a beautiful peak: trusting Jesus is the only key we need.
So if it's a free gift, why do we make it so complicated? Why do we keep bolting our own exhausting effort onto what Jesus already finished?
We just have this stubborn human habit of overcomplicating grace. But salvation is stunningly simple. When the Philippian jailer was frantic for answers, Paul told him plainly, "Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved" (Acts 16:31).
That's it. Believing is what unlocks right standing with God.
You don't have to keep hauling around the burden of proving your worth through what you do. The pressure to perform is off. So today, instead of glancing back at all the good you've done—or fretting over what you've left undone—shift your gaze. Start by thanking Jesus for what He already did for you. Ask Him to make this grace the bedrock of your life, and rest in the truth that you're fully accepted through faith alone.
A Few Honest Questions:
-
If someone asked about your faith journey today, would you reach for your list of accomplishments or for Jesus? Be honest.
-
What's one piece of "effort" you keep adding to grace, as if believing weren't quite enough?
-
Why do you think the simplest truths—like just believe—are often the hardest ones to actually rest in?
