"But now apart from the law the righteousness of God has been made known, to which the Law and the Prophets testify." (Romans 3:21)

I once had lunch with a younger friend who genuinely loved Jesus. She'd grown up in church her whole life and had just finished a Christian college. But the longer we talked, the clearer it became—she was running herself into the ground trying to be a "good" Christian.

When I gently asked about all the pressure she was heaping on herself, she got a little defensive. And honestly, my heart just ached for her. In her sincere, desperate longing to please God, she was somehow missing the whole point of Jesus. Without even realizing it, she was leaning on her own effort to make herself right with God.

Right here in Romans, Paul throws out a lifeline—a genuine shift in thinking that changes everything about how we relate to God.

Up to this point in the letter, he's built an airtight case that we can't save ourselves. No amount of rule-keeping makes us truly righteous. And then, right when it all feels hopeless, Paul flips the script.

The righteousness we're so desperate for? It can't be earned. It comes from God, freely, completely apart from the Law. That's the good news of the gospel—exactly where our ability runs out, God's provision steps in. He hands us a righteousness that has nothing to do with our performance.

This was radical in the first century, and if we're honest, it's still a tough one to swallow today. When you've spent your whole life following the rules—like my friend at lunch—loosening your grip on your own effort feels almost wrong.

So why do so many of us still miss it? Our rules just look a little different now. We keep grinding away in our own strength because we misunderstand how grace actually works. Somewhere deep down, we assume we have to earn forgiveness by checking off enough of the moral checklist. If we just try a little harder, read a little more, behave a little better, surely we'll finally tip the scales.

But here's Paul's stunning claim in Romans 3:21—this grace isn't new at all. The Law and the Prophets were testifying to it the whole time.

The Law was never meant to save us through flawless behavior. It was a shadow, designed to trace the outline of the One who was coming—Christ (Colossians 2:17). Every Old Testament sacrifice, every commandment, kept pointing forward to the perfect sacrifice of Jesus (Hebrews 10:1-4). So if the Law and the Prophets were really about Him and not about our rule-keeping, then of course God's true righteousness comes apart from the commandments. It's a gift to receive, not a wage to earn (Romans 6:23).

This one truth is the foundation for the rest of Romans. It's what sets us free: faith in Jesus is what puts us in right standing with God (Romans 3:22).

You don't have to carry the weight of being a "good enough" Christian on your own. Your standing with God was secured by what Jesus already finished. So step off the treadmill today. Thank Him for the unearned righteousness handed to you through faith, and let your heart finally rest.
