The Token of a Deeper Covenant—Romans 4:11
"And he received circumcision as a sign, a seal of the righteousness that he had by faith while he was still uncircumcised. So then, he is the father of all who believe but have not been circumcised, in order that righteousness might be credited to them." (Romans 4:11)
In my early twenties, I used to travel to different states to help train cooks and servers whenever a new Perkins restaurant was opening. I'd be gone a couple weeks at a time, pulling long, exhausting hours. After one especially brutal trip, my boyfriend surprised me with a diamond engagement ring. We'd been talking about marriage, so I knew it was coming eventually—but that was easily one of the best homecomings of my life. A little over a year later we were married, and here we are.
My ring, like the millions of rings out there, is a symbol of the covenant of marriage. At weddings, the officiant often pauses to explain what the rings mean. But we all know the obvious truth: slipping on a ring doesn't magically make you married. Marriage is choosing to enter a covenant with another person. The ring is just the outward token of an exchange that already happened in the heart.
Circumcision worked the exact same way for Abraham and the whole Jewish nation. It was a symbol—a physical token of a covenant relationship between God and Abraham. A visible sign of an invisible, spiritual reality.
And here's the piece Paul really wants us to catch: that covenant relationship existed long before the token of it ever showed up.
Abraham was declared righteous simply because he chose to believe what God told him. Faith came first; it was the foundation. The physical sign arrived much later as a seal on righteousness he already possessed. And because his standing rested on faith and not on a ritual, Paul says Abraham is the father of everyone who believes. You don't need the outward token to belong to the family of faith. You just need the trusting heart.
That pattern still holds for us. We're made right with God by trusting His perfect provision—Jesus. Not by religious performance, not by checking the right boxes, not by wearing the right outward signs to prove our worth.
We tend to make faith so much harder than it is. We pile on symbols to show God how serious we are, quietly hoping all that effort will finally earn His love. But He's just asking us to trust Him.
So take a quiet moment with your own story. Where are you still wearing yourself out trying to earn God's approval? Where can you simply stop, breathe, and thank Him for grace He's already given? Let go of the striving, trust His promises, and let this truth settle you into a deeper peace today.
A Few Honest Questions:
-
What outward "tokens" of faith are you tempted to trust in more than the heart behind them?
-
A ring doesn't make a marriage—so what actually makes your relationship with God real?
-
Where have you been performing to earn love that's already yours, and what would it feel like to stop?
