"Therefore, the promise comes by faith, so that it may be by grace and may be guaranteed to all Abraham’s offspring—not only to those who are of the law but also to those who have the faith of Abraham. He is the father of us all. " (Romans 4:16)

Paul has just spent fifteen straight verses building an airtight case that righteousness can't be earned. He comes at it from every angle, hoping we'll finally get it—right standing with God only comes by trusting Him.

Then, right in the thick of Romans 4, he turns a sharp corner and hands us one of those jaw-dropping "aha" moments.

"Therefore, the promise comes by faith, so that it may be by grace and may be guaranteed…"

Did you catch it? God's promises to you are guaranteed.

We don't live in a world with many guarantees. Contracts have loopholes. Warranties expire. People break their word every single day. But God wants you to experience everything He's promised without a shred of fear or doubt.

Because He's gracious through and through, He built a foolproof way for us to reach these promises: faith. If the promise hinged on our perfect behavior, it would always be shaky. We'd forever be wondering if we'd done enough. But since it rests entirely on His grace, it's rock-solid secure.

The promises of God are ours in Christ Jesus. As Paul told the Corinthians, "For no matter how many promises God has made, they are 'Yes' in Christ. And so through him the 'Amen' is spoken by us to the glory of God" (2 Corinthians 1:20). He genuinely wants you to know the unchangeable nature of His purpose (Hebrews 6:17-18). His promises are meant to anchor your soul.

Faith is simply the gracious way we lay hold of what God has already provided. But faith works like a muscle—sometimes we have to learn how to use it before we actually see the promises unfold.

That's exactly why Abraham's story matters so much. It's not a rigid formula or some technique we have to execute flawlessly. It's a real, living picture of how a trusting heart takes hold of grace.

Watch the arc of his journey:

• He trusted God's power to create life where there was none (Romans 4:17).

• He left natural hope behind and hoped against hope to believe an outrageous promise (Romans 4:18).

• He honestly faced the bleak reality of his body without letting his faith crumble (Romans 4:19).

• He refused to waver in unbelief, instead growing strong in faith and giving glory to God (Romans 4:20).

• He became fully persuaded that God had the power to do exactly what He'd promised (Romans 4:21).

• And in the end, he watched the promise come true (Romans 4:22-23).

Abraham didn't earn his miracle by nailing every step. He simply stayed convinced of God's goodness. He kept his eyes on the Promiser instead of his problem.

We'll walk through each of those steps more closely in the posts ahead. But for now, just sit in this: God's promises are guaranteed by faith precisely because He is so full of grace toward you.

So think about your own life. Is there a specific promise from God's Word for something you're facing right now? And where are you finding it hard to believe it? Maybe it's the long wait. Maybe it's that quiet fear that His goodness is for everyone else but you. Whatever's blocking your trust, you don't have to hide it. Bring it honestly to Him. Lean into His grace, and rest in the truth that in Christ, His promises are guaranteed for you.
