"The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God's children." (Romans 8:16)

Ever woken up just feeling far from God? Nothing dramatic happened. You just rolled over, the weight of everything settled in, and somewhere in there you felt distant, unworthy, unsure you even belong in his family at all.

Here's the problem with letting a morning like that call the shots: feelings are terrible narrators. They shift with your circumstances, your stress, your sleep, whatever you're carrying. If your belonging to Christ hung on how you felt on any given day, you'd live in a constant state of anxiety, riding the emotional weather up and down forever.

Paul hands us something so much steadier in Romans 8:16: "The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God's children."

Notice who's doing the testifying. Not your mood. Not your track record. The Spirit himself. Right before this, Paul said everyone led by the Spirit of God is a child of God (Romans 8:14) — and then he doesn't leave you to guess whether that's true for you. He says the Spirit was given specifically to confirm it, deep down, to your own heart.

And let's be honest — being a Christian doesn't mean the hard days stop. You'll still hit stretches of fear, sadness, spiritual dryness where God feels a thousand miles away. That's normal. That's human. But God never left the confirmation of your adoption up to your emotions. He anchored it to his own presence living in you. So hear this plainly: If you have put your trust in Jesus, then you belong to Christ. It's not up for negotiation, and it doesn't rise and fall with how strongly you feel him today. It rests on who God is and on what his Spirit keeps whispering to yours.

This isn't a new idea, either. Long before Jesus ever walked the earth, Isaiah caught a glimpse of it: "to them I will give within my temple and its walls a memorial and a name better than sons and daughters; I will give them an everlasting name that will not be cut off" (Isaiah 56:5). An everlasting name. One that can't be erased.

That promise landed fully in Jesus. Scripture says trusting him births you straight into God's family: "Yet to all who received him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God—children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband's will, but born of God" (John 1:12-13). Born of God. Not signed up. Not on probation. Born in. And that means you carry a name that lasts forever, held there by the Spirit Jesus sent to be your steady inside confirmation.

So when your emotions try to convince you God's slipped away, will you listen to them — or to the Spirit that keeps telling you the truth?

Because belonging to God isn't only a future thing you're waiting to cash in someday. It reshapes right now. "For he has rescued us from the dominion of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of the Son he loves" (Colossians 1:13). You've already been moved. Already brought in. And John can barely contain himself over it: "How great is the love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God!" (1 John 3:1).

That love does something practical too — it equips you for the actual battles you face. John tells us Jesus came to destroy the works of the devil, and because you share his life, you're handed the faith to walk through whatever the world throws at you: "For everyone born of God overcomes the world. This is the victory that has overcome the world, even our faith. Who is it that overcomes the world? Only he who believes that Jesus is the Son of God" (1 John 5:4-5).

That doesn't mean hardship disappears. It means that in the middle of the hardship, you've got a quiet, steady strength that doesn't come from you. You're not a victim of your circumstances, because the Spirit inside you keeps confirming your victory in Christ, day after day, whether you feel it or not.

So the next time you feel overwhelmed or unworthy, take a breath and pause. The Spirit is speaking love over you right now. He's pouring out grace and steadily testifying to your heart that you are deeply, permanently loved. Lay down the doubts. Rest in his witness. Receive a love you didn't earn, trust the everlasting name he's given you, and step into your day with the quiet, unshakable confidence of God's own child.
