The True Freedom of the Spirit—Romans 8:2

The True Freedom of the Spirit—Romans 8:2

Written by Juli Camarin
"because through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit of life set me free from the law of sin and death" (Romans 8:2)

Ever stared at a hard situation and felt completely trapped by what your eyes could see? Most of us do it. We size up reality based on the evidence right in front of us — the circumstances look bleak, so we feel defeated. But what if the truest things about your life aren't the things you can actually see?

Paul says something in Romans 8:2 that flips our normal thinking on its head: "because through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit of life set me free from the law of sin and death."

Read that slowly. Christ already set you free. Past tense. Done.

For a lot of us, that's a tough one to swallow. You look at your daily struggles and think, okay, so where'd that freedom go? But Jesus told his followers that real life runs on a different level than the one we usually watch: "The Spirit gives life; the flesh counts for nothing. The words I have spoken to you are spirit and they are life" (John 6:63). To actually feel this freedom, you have to catch it with the Spirit, not just with your eyes.

Look at what comes right before this verse and it clicks: "Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus... because through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit of life set me free from the law of sin and death" (Romans 8:1-2).

One of the first things Jesus did when he rescued you was snap the chains that were holding you. And the old law? It was good — perfectly holy, actually. It laid out blessings for obedience and curses for disobedience (Deuteronomy 28). But it ran headfirst into a problem: us. The law showed you exactly what God's standard looked like, and in the same breath, showed you that you could never pull it off on your own.

The law pointed out the need. It just couldn't fix it. You were powerless to keep it, so you stayed stuck under the weight of your own shortcomings.

Here's the good part. Christ stepped in and did the exact thing the law couldn't. He became the perfect sacrifice, meeting every righteous demand of the law on your behalf. He pulled you out from under the condemning power of sin and death, handed you a brand-new nature, and gave you the Spirit to walk with you.

And there's a real difference between grinding away under the weight of your own performance and living by the Spirit. The law of sin and death drags you down into guilt. The law of the Spirit lifts you into life, peace, and freedom.

Here's where it trips us up, though. If you keep measuring your standing with God by your circumstances, your past, or your worst days, you'll always come up feeling defeated. But the Bible says you're forgiven. It says you're free. Those aren't wishful thoughts — In Christ, they're spiritual facts, and they're more solid than anything you're staring at right now.

So stop reading your spiritual reality off your circumstances. You don't have to keep living under a system that only exposes your flaws. You get to trust what Jesus already finished.

Where are you still trying to earn the freedom you already have?

Set the weight down. Trust what Jesus did, and start walking with the Spirit who brings real life, real freedom, and lasting peace.

A Few Honest Questions:

  1. Where are you letting your circumstances define your standing with God instead of trusting what Christ already secured?

  2. Where are you still trying to earn God's approval instead of resting in grace you can't earn?

  3. What's one everyday way you could walk with the Spirit today?

No striving to prove yourself, no wondering if you belong. And Paul goes further still, offering an assurance that has steadied believers for two thousand years: nothing in all creation—not fear, not failure, not even death—can ever separate you from the love of God. Because of that, you can look toward tomorrow with confidence, knowing your future in Christ is already secure.
