"You, however, are controlled not by the sinful nature but by the Spirit, if the Spirit of God lives in you. And if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he does not belong to Christ." (Romans 8:9)

Think about the moment two people stand at the altar and say their vows. Something real shifts. They're not two separate lives anymore — they've become a new thing together, tied to each other in a way they weren't the day before. And with that comes something quietly huge: you belong to someone now. A name. A covenant. A fresh start. Love and devotion, all wrapped into one moment.

That's a pretty good picture of what happens when you're joined to Christ. Paul gets at it in Romans 8:9 — you belong to Jesus because his Spirit actually comes to live inside you.

And here's what makes it so good. The whole thing runs on the most lopsided trade you could imagine. Jesus hands you his name, his Spirit, his perfect righteousness, his love that doesn't quit. And what do you give him back? Your guilt. Your shame. That heavy, exhausting old nature you've been dragging around for years. You hand over the mess, and he gives you everything.

Before you knew Christ, your whole life was tied to the daily grind of your own struggles. When you're locked onto the natural world — trying to muscle through life on your own strength — the usual result is a knot in your stomach and a mind that won't settle. But Paul gently reminds us that when we set our minds on what the Spirit shows us, we walk right into life and peace (Romans 8:6).

Because you're united to Jesus, the righteous requirements of the law are fully met in you (Romans 8:4). That doesn't mean you'll suddenly stop stumbling or hit some flawless streak. It means the thing that defines you has completely changed. You're not labeled by your worst days anymore. You're not ruled by your past mistakes or your weak spots. You're defined by the Spirit of God who's made himself at home in your heart.

So how often do you still let an old failure tell you who you are?

The Spirit living in you is the proof — the actual evidence — that you've got a new nature. He's the guarantee of your covenant with the Lord, telling the world, and honestly telling your own doubting heart, that you're loved and spoken for. You belong to Christ. 

And as you lean into that relationship, the Spirit starts steering your steps and reshaping what you want. Scripture puts it simply: "For all who are led by the Spirit of God are sons (& daughters) of God" (Romans 8:14). You're not tied to the old failures of the flesh anymore. You're one with Christ, and his Spirit is the steady, comforting reminder that it's true.

Here's the thing, though — it's so easy to forget who you belong to when life gets heavy. The pressure piles on, and we forget the vows, the covenant, the grace we never earned that brought us into this family in the first place.

So take a breath today and just enjoy who you actually are. You don't have to earn God's affection, and you don't have to figure life out on your own. Listen for the Spirit's nudge in the ordinary decisions. Drop the weight of trying to be perfect. And rest in the one thing nothing can shake: you belong completely to Jesus.
