How to Choose Life and True Freedom Today—Romans 8:13
"For if you live according to the sinful nature, you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the misdeeds of the body, you will live." (Romans 8:13)
Think about the last time your own reactions left you completely drained. You snapped when you meant to stay quiet. You reached for the old coping habit again. And by the end of it, you weren't just tired — you felt hollow, like something inside you had been quietly leaking out all day. It's so easy to slip back into the patterns that wear us down and leave our hearts and our relationships running on empty.
Paul puts his finger on that exact struggle in Romans 8:13: "For if you live according to the sinful nature, you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the misdeeds of the body, you will live."
Now, before that word "die" sends you spiraling — stop. Paul isn't threatening believers with losing their salvation or getting cut off from God. That's not what he's talking about here. He's talking about the here and now. The lived, daily fallout of the choices we make.
Because when you walk according to the flesh — leaning on your old coping mechanisms, your anger, your self-reliance, your pride — it produces a kind of death right in your everyday life. Not eternal death. The slow, quiet kind. Isolation. Anxiety. Burnout. Relationships fraying at the edges. You end up chained to the very things you were set free from, running yourself ragged serving a master that never pays off.
But here's the good part: you don't have to keep living stuck in those cycles. The Spirit offers a completely different path, and it leads to real life — not someday, but right now.
Want a simple way to tell which path you're actually on? Galatians 5:19-23 lays it out plainly. The flesh cranks out discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition — the stuff that slowly dismantles your peace and quietly poisons your home and your work. The Spirit grows something else entirely: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control. And those aren't just nice-sounding ideals or a bar you'll never clear. They're the actual character of Jesus, taking root in you.
Paul said it another way a few verses back: "The mind of sinful man is death, but the mind controlled by the Spirit is life and peace" (Romans 8:6).
So where in your life are you feeling the exhaustion of the flesh instead of the peace of the Spirit?
Here's what makes this possible. It's not you white-knuckling your way into better behavior. It's the power of the Spirit living inside you that equips you to live differently. You've been handed a brand-new identity and the actual capacity to "put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness" (Ephesians 4:24). The equipment isn't something you're waiting on. It's already in you.
That doesn't mean you'll suddenly float through life in effortless perfection. You won't. Temptation still shows up. The world will keep whispering that your old chains weren't so bad. Walking by the Spirit isn't a tidy formula you punch in — it's an ongoing, gentle renewal of your mind and a daily willingness to lean on grace instead of grit.
So what does that actually look like on a normal Tuesday? A few honest steps:
Pause before you react. When frustration or fear rises up, take a breath first. Just a beat. Quietly ask the Spirit to guide your response before you fire off the old one.
Renew your mind. Trade the chaotic, fear-driven noise of the world for the steady truth of Scripture. What you feed your mind shapes what comes out of you.
Choose yielding over striving. Stop trying to manufacture the perfect version of yourself on your own strength. Lean into the grace and the capacity the Spirit already put inside you.
God didn't hand you this freedom to test you. He did it because he loves you — fully. The Spirit living in you is the living proof that you're a cherished child of God, deeply loved and completely equipped for whatever's ahead.
So today, lay down the old patterns that keep draining you dry. Receive the love you didn't earn, choose the thoughts that line up with the Spirit, and start walking in the life that's already yours in Christ.
