We like things we can see and measure. Family, background, accomplishments. We want our standing to come from something solid we can point to.

God doesn't work that way.

Paul quotes one line from Genesis to make his point: "It is through Isaac that your offspring will be reckoned" (Genesis 21:12b). Abraham had more than one son. But only Isaac was the child of the promise.

Why Isaac? Because he wasn't born through normal means. Sarah was way past childbearing age. When Abraham tried to force the promise along by having Ishmael with Sarah's servant, that wasn't the plan. Paul puts it simply in Galatians: one son "was born in the ordinary way," the other "as the result of a promise" (Galatians 4:23).

Isaac came because God said so. Not because Abraham figured it out.

This isn't about putting Ishmael down—God blessed him too (Genesis 21:13). It's about the category God works in. "Children of the promise." And that category isn't closed off by ethnicity. It's not inherited. You receive it.

Which changes how you think about belonging to God. You don't get in by being born into the right family, following enough rules, or performing well enough. You get in the same way Isaac showed up: because God said so.

"If you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham's seed, and heirs according to the promise" (Galatians 3:29).

That's humbling, because you can't earn it. And it's freeing, because you can't lose it by messing up.
