You Can Have Everything and Still Miss It—Romans 9:4-5
"...the people of Israel. Theirs is the adoption as sons; theirs the divine glory, the covenants, the receiving of the law, the temple worship and the promises. Theirs are the patriarchs, and from them is traced the human ancestry of Christ, who is God over all, forever praised! Amen" (Romans 9:4-5)
Ever grow up near something amazing and stop noticing it? People drive hours to see the mountains you barely glance at anymore. Familiarity does that.
It happens with faith too.
Paul lists everything God gave Israel—the adoption, the glory, the covenants, the law, the temple, the promises. And the biggest one: Jesus himself came from these people. They had it all.
And that's exactly why Paul was grieving. They had every piece of the puzzle and still didn't recognize the picture when Jesus showed up.
None of these gifts were the problem. They were meant to point straight to God. But here's what happens with people—we take something meant for relationship and turn it into routine. The covenants became tradition. The law became a checklist. The promises became background noise.
You can be surrounded by the things of God and completely miss the heart of God.
And this isn't just an ancient problem. If you grew up in church, this is a live danger for you. You can know all the right answers, sing the right songs, sit in the right pew your whole life—and still relate to God like it's a performance instead of a relationship.
Church attendance can't save you. Christian parents can't save you. Only faith in Jesus does that.
So the question isn't whether you have the gifts. It's whether you've let them make you numb.
A Few Honest Questions:
-
Where has church become routine instead of relationship?
-
What used to move you that you now do on autopilot?
-
Are you treating God like a system or a Person?
