“By faith Joseph, when his end was near, spoke about the exodus of the Israelites from Egypt and gave instructions about his bones” (Hebrews 11:22)

It is a rare and beautiful thing to plant a tree knowing you will never sit in its shade. We live in a world that demands immediate results. We want our packages delivered overnight and our life goals realized by the weekend. He gathered his family and said, “I am about to die. But God will surely come to your aid and take you up out of this land to the land he promised on oath to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.” He then made them swear an oath: “God will surely come to your aid, and then you must carry my bones up from this place” (Genesis 50:24-25).

A Time Capsule of Hope

Joseph spoke these words in faith, participating in the grand plan of God long before it unfolded. He did not just leave his family with well wishes; he left them with a physical reminder of God's promise.

Over the next four hundred years, circumstances grew incredibly dark. The Israelites went from honored guests to oppressed slaves in Egypt. Through generations of bitter captivity, the situation looked entirely hopeless. Yet, Joseph's bones remained with them. They served as a silent, powerful testimony that their current captivity was not the end of their story. God was going to come through.

Decades later, when the great exodus finally happened, Joseph’s faith was honored. Moses made sure to fulfill the ancient promise: “Moses took the bones of Joseph with him because Joseph had made the sons of Israel swear an oath” (Exodus 13:19).
