“By faith Jacob, when he was dying, blessed each of Joseph’s sons, and worshiped as he leaned on the top of his staff” (Hebrews 11:21)

End-of-life conversations always carry a profound weight. We lean in closely to hear the final words of the people we love, knowing those words are chosen with great intention. Thousands of years ago, an elderly patriarch named Jacob gathered his family for one last exchange. His physical eyes were failing him, but his spiritual vision had never been clearer.

The writer of Hebrews captures this scene with striking simplicity:

“By faith Jacob, when he was dying, blessed each of Joseph’s sons, and worshiped as he leaned on the top of his staff” (Hebrews 11:21).

To truly understand the depth of this moment, we have to look at the unexpected way Jacob handed down his family blessing.

A Departure from Tradition

Jacob asked to see his grandsons, Manasseh and Ephraim. He intended to officially adopt them as his own. By doing this, he was giving his son Joseph the double portion of the family inheritance. Customarily, this double portion belonged to the firstborn son, Reuben. However, Reuben had tragically forfeited his birthright years earlier through his own destructive choices (Genesis 35:22).

Joseph brought his two boys forward to receive their grandfather's blessing. He carefully positioned them according to the strict traditions of the day. He placed Manasseh, the oldest, at Jacob’s right hand—the position reserved for the primary blessing. He placed Ephraim, the younger brother, at Jacob’s left hand.

Then, Jacob did something completely unexpected. He reached out and crossed his arms.

He placed his right hand on the head of the younger brother, Ephraim, and his left hand on Manasseh. Joseph was immediately upset. He tried to physically move his father’s hands, assuming the old man was simply confused by his failing eyesight. But Jacob refused to move his hands. He was not confused at all.

Trusting the Unseen Plan

Here is a beautiful truth: God rarely follows our expected cultural scripts. Jacob was acting under divine inspiration, seeing a future that Joseph could not yet understand.

Jacob pronounced a rich blessing over these boys, praying that the God who had been his faithful shepherd for his entire life would deeply bless them (Genesis 48:15-16). He confirmed that both boys would become great nations, but he declared by faith that the younger brother would be greater.

History proved Jacob entirely right. The tribe of Ephraim flourished, eventually becoming the largest of the northern tribes of Israel. Decades later, Moses echoed this exact blessing, speaking over the tens of thousands of Ephraim (Deuteronomy 33:13-17). Jacob saw what God was building long before it ever happened. In that same season, he also looked ahead to his other son, Judah, and prophesied that the ultimate King—the Messiah—would one day come through his family line (Genesis 49:10).

Leaning on the Shepherd

Jacob spent his early years constantly striving, manipulating, and trying to control his own destiny. Yet here, leaning on his staff at the end of his life, he simply worshiped. He completely surrendered to God's unconventional plans.

We all experience seasons when God’s plan seems to go against our logical expectations. You might look at your own circumstances and feel like things are entirely out of order. God sometimes crosses His hands in our lives, placing His greatest blessings in the places we least expect.

When life does not line up with the traditional script, we have an invitation to trust the unseen work of God. You can rest today in the quiet assurance that the very same God who shepherded Jacob is faithfully watching over your future, too.
