The Silent March: How Faith Toppled Jericho’s Walls—Hebrews 11:30
“By faith the walls of Jericho fell, after the people had marched around them for seven days” (Hebrews 11:30)
Have you ever stared at a problem in your life that felt completely impenetrable?
We all encounter massive walls at some point in our journey. It might be a deeply broken relationship, a sudden health crisis, or a lingering season of financial hardship. From the ground, these obstacles look too thick to break through and too tall to climb over.
Thousands of years ago, the nation of Israel faced this exact scenario. After wandering in the desert for forty years, they finally stood on the edge of the promised land. But right in front of them stood Jericho—a heavily fortified city meant to keep them out.
The writer of Hebrews summarizes what happened next in one powerful sentence:
“By faith the walls of Jericho fell, after the people had marched around them for seven days” (Hebrews 11:30).
At surface level, walking in circles around a massive fortress seems like a terrible military strategy. But as we look closer at this story, we uncover a profound lesson about trusting God when His instructions do not match our logic.
The Wisdom of Silence
God told the Israelites to march around the city once a day for six days, with the Ark of the Covenant leading the way to remind them of His presence. On the seventh day, they were to march around it seven times, blow trumpets, and shout.
But Joshua, their leader, added one deeply insightful instruction to this plan:
“Do not give a war cry, do not raise your voices, do not say a word until the day I tell you to shout. Then shout!” (Joshua 6:10).
Why would Joshua command complete silence? To understand this, we have to look back at their history. Forty years prior, a different group of Israelites stood on the edge of this same land. Ten spies brought back a negative, fear-filled report that spread like wildfire through the camp. The people allowed those negative words to talk them out of God’s promise. Because of their vocal unbelief, an entire generation spent the rest of their lives wandering in the desert.
Joshua knew how quickly a single whispered doubt could infect an entire crowd. By commanding silence, he prevented them from talking themselves out of a miracle.
Walking Through the Taunts
Imagine what it was actually like to carry out this silent march.
Day after day, they walked in the dust around the thick walls of Jericho. It is highly likely that the people of Jericho stood on top of those walls, shouting insults and mocking them. With every passing day, the march probably felt more foolish. It would have been so incredibly easy for someone to turn to their neighbor and whisper, "This is pointless. We are never getting through."
Instead, they remained quiet. They let their feet do the talking. Their silence allowed them to walk out their faith in what God had instructed them to do, step by step.
The Shout of Deliverance
Here is a beautiful truth: God always honors a heart that dares to trust His word.
On the seventh day, the long silence finally broke. The priests blew their trumpets, the people let out a massive shout, and the impossible happened. The impenetrable walls of Jericho crumbled to the ground. The Israelites walked straight in and experienced a total victory, taking God at His promise.
Circling Your Own Jericho
What wall are you circling right now?
You might be in a season where God is asking you to keep showing up, keep walking, and keep trusting, even when nothing seems to be happening. You might hear the mocking voices of doubt telling you that your situation will never change.
In these moments, it is vital to guard your words. Do not let fear talk you out of what God has promised. Quiet your doubts, set your eyes on the invisible God, and keep walking in faith.
