“By faith the people passed through the Red Sea as on dry land; but when the Egyptians tried to do so, they were drowned” (Hebrews 11:29)

We have all faced a moment where the path forward seems entirely impossible. You look ahead, and the obstacles seem towering. You look behind, and your past mistakes or current fears are rapidly closing in. You are trapped. Thousands of years ago, an entire nation found themselves in this exact, terrifying position, and their story offers us a profound lesson in trust.

The writer of Hebrews captures this incredible moment of deliverance in a single sentence:

“By faith the people passed through the Red Sea as on dry land; but when the Egyptians tried to do so, they were drowned” (Hebrews 11:29).

To truly understand the weight of this verse, we have to look at the narrative unfolding on the shores of the Red Sea.

The Courage to Be Still

The Israelites had just escaped generations of bitter slavery in Egypt. But as they camped by the sea, they looked back and saw Pharaoh’s massive army marching toward them. Panic immediately set in. They cried out, completely convinced they were going to die in the desert.

In the midst of this chaos, Moses stood before the terrified crowd and offered a response that still echoes with incredible power today:

“Do not be afraid. Stand firm and you will see the deliverance the LORD will bring you today. The Egyptians you see today you will never see again. The LORD will fight for you; you need only to be still” (Exodus 14:13-14).

Here is a beautiful truth about this moment: Moses spoke these words of absolute confidence before he had any idea how God was going to save them. He did not know a path was going to open up through the water. He simply knew the character of the God he served. He trusted that the Lord would deliver His people, even when the logistics were a complete mystery.

A Path Through the Deep

What happened next is one of the most stunning events recorded in scripture.

God told Moses to stop crying out and simply move forward. He instructed Moses to raise his staff and stretch his hand out over the sea (Exodus 14:15-16). When Moses took this step of faith, God sent a powerful wind that pushed the waters back, creating a clear, dry path right through the middle of the sea.

Imagine walking into the midst of the ocean, with walls of water piled high to your left and right, trusting that they will not crash down on you. It took immense faith for the Israelites to step onto that dry seabed. But God proved entirely faithful. He guided His children safely to the other side. When the Egyptian army tried to follow, the waters returned to their natural place, completely eliminating the threat.

Trusting the Unseen Way

There is a deep, encouraging insight we can draw from this historical event. God specializes in making a way where there is absolutely no way.

You might be standing at the edge of your own Red Sea today. Perhaps it is a devastating health diagnosis, a financial crisis, or a deeply broken relationship. The waters look deep, and the pressure behind you is mounting.

In these moments, we are invited to share in the faith of Moses. You do not need to have the blueprint for your rescue. You simply need to stand firm and trust the God who holds the waters. He always responds to the faith of His children. As the Apostle Paul gently reminds us, “Anyone who believes in him will never be put to shame” (Romans 10:11).
