Running the Race: Fixing Our Eyes on Jesus—Hebrews 12:1-3
“Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us. Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy set before him endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. Consider him who endured such opposition from sinful men, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart” (Hebrews 12:1-3)
Have you ever tried to run while carrying a heavy backpack? Every step feels like a struggle, your energy drains quickly, and the finish line seems entirely impossible to reach. Life often feels exactly like that—a grueling marathon we are trying to run while weighed down by fear, stress, and heavy burdens.
But there is a profound, encouraging remedy found in the twelfth chapter of Hebrews. No matter what circumstances life brings or what trials you are facing today, this passage offers a powerful key to navigating the middle of your struggle:
“Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us. Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith...” (Hebrews 12:1-2).
The Stadium of Heaven
Every time I read this passage, I picture a massive stadium. I imagine countless men and women lining the streets of heaven, cheering loudly for those of us still running our race. We are surrounded by a great cloud of witnesses—ordinary people who trusted God, finished their earthly course, and now stand as a testament to His faithfulness.
Learning from their quiet endurance, the writer of Hebrews encourages us to keep moving forward. But to run well, we are instructed to leave two specific things behind.
First, we must strip off everything that weighs us down. Think of this as unnecessary baggage. It could be a persistent fear, a pile of excuses, or the anxiety of trying to control the future. These things might not be inherently evil, but they are heavy. We are invited to throw them aside.
Second, we are told to remove the sin that so easily entangles us. In the original language, the word used for sin here often means "to miss the mark" or "to be without a share in." Given the context of the previous chapter, which is entirely about trusting God, the writer is specifically talking about unbelief. Unbelief wraps around our ankles and trips us up. It prevents us from stepping fully into the beautiful, faith-filled life God has prepared for us.
Looking to the Ultimate Example
In the messy, chaotic middle of life, it is incredibly easy to get distracted. We look at the storm, we look at our own weakness, and we quickly lose our footing. The remedy is where we choose to focus our attention.
Here is a beautiful truth: Jesus is the ultimate example of how to run this race. The scripture tells us to look away from all distractions and fix our eyes entirely on Him.
Jesus endured the unimaginable to secure the prize of our redemption. He looked forward to the cross with a deep, resolute joy because He knew exactly what it meant—complete restoration for you and me. He disregarded the shame of dying a criminal's death because the beautiful outcome of saving humanity far surpassed the temporary pain.
When you feel exhausted and ready to quit, consider what Jesus endured. We focus on His steadfastness so that we will not grow weary or lose heart in our own journey.
A Call to Keep Moving Forward
When we fix our eyes securely on Jesus, we find a deep, quiet strength to continue our mission. We stop looking at the heavy bags we used to carry, and we start looking at the One who carried the heaviest burden of all on our behalf.
Are you carrying unnecessary weight today? Where is God inviting you to drop the heavy bags of fear or unbelief, and simply trust Him for the next step?
Take a deep breath, leave the extra weight behind, and keep your eyes on Jesus. You have a beautiful race to run, and heaven is cheering you on.
