When Hardship is Actually Grace: Discovering God's Perfecting Love—Hebrews 12:4-9
“In your struggle against sin, you have not yet resisted to the point of shedding your blood. And you have forgotten that word of encouragement that addresses you as sons: “My son, do not make light of the Lord’s discipline, and do not lose heart when he rebukes you, because the Lord disciplines those he loves, and he punishes everyone he accepts as a son.” Endure hardship as discipline; God is treating you as sons. For what son is not disciplined by his father? If you are not disciplined (and everyone undergoes discipline), then you are illegitimate children and not true sons. Moreover, we have all had human fathers who disciplined us and we respected them for it. How much more should we submit to the Father of our spirits and live!” (Hebrews 12:4-9)
There was a season in my life where everything I had worked for professionally was suddenly stripped away. A project I had poured my heart into was renamed and handed over to someone who had joined our team under highly unusual circumstances. I felt deeply treated unfairly. To make matters worse, I felt completely unseen. No one seemed to understand my position or validate the profound betrayal I felt toward the company, this new individual, and my boss.
It was a tumultuous time, spilling over into both my professional and personal life. I wrestled with the sheer unfairness of the ordeal. Months passed, and instead of getting better, the bitterness only grew heavier.
One day, needing to clear my head, I went for a long walk. As I walked, I listened to an audio recording of Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount. The words spoken were just as relevant that afternoon as the day He first taught them on the hillside.
As I listened, His words began to pierce through my frustration. Every sentence Jesus spoke seemed to weigh a thousand pounds. By the end of my walk, I was in tears, and I knew exactly what I had to do. The Lord gently but firmly spoke into my heart that I needed to seek forgiveness from my boss.
To my mind, I was the one who had been deeply wronged. Yet, God was dealing sternly with my own heart and my reaction to the pain. As I chose to respond in obedience, He gave me the grace to walk into my boss's office and ask for forgiveness. The moment I humbled myself, the heavy clouds began to part, and deep healing finally began.
The Beautiful Truth About Discipline
Both my professional and personal life improved dramatically after that day, but more importantly, I learned a vital lesson about how God works.
The Lord desires the finished product of our lives to be pure and refined. While God does not cause every painful circumstance or unfair situation we face, He absolutely uses them to shape us. The writer of Hebrews offers a profound perspective on this exact struggle:
“And you have forgotten that word of encouragement that addresses you as sons: ‘My son, do not make light of the Lord’s discipline, and do not lose heart when he rebukes you, because the Lord disciplines those he loves, and he punishes everyone he accepts as a son.’ Endure hardship as discipline; God is treating you as sons.” (Hebrews 12:5-7)
Here is a beautiful truth: the very same trials that feel like they are breaking us are often the tools God uses to refine us. When we face hardship, it is easy to assume God is angry with us or has forgotten us entirely. But the writer of Hebrews flips this assumption upside down. Hardship, when viewed through the lens of faith, actually validates our status as God’s deeply loved children. Just as a loving earthly father corrects a child to protect their future, God disciplines us to train us in righteousness.
Letting the Word Do Its Work
God will always speak truth to us in the middle of our chaotic circumstances. Sometimes, that truth is painful to hear because it asks us to let go of our pride, our right to be angry, or our desire for vindication. But the outcome far outweighs the temporary stretching we experience.
In my situation, God used Scripture to correct my course. The Apostle Paul beautifully described this process: “All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work” (2 Timothy 3:16-17). King David observed the exact same grace centuries earlier, writing, “Blessed is the man you discipline, O LORD, the man you teach from your law” (Psalm 94:12).
God’s Word is the gentle but powerful tool He uses to break the grip of bitterness, pull down our defensive walls, and train us in the way we should go.
If you are walking through an incredibly unfair season right now, do not lose heart. What if this hardship is not a sign of God's absence, but the very evidence of His fatherly love, working to equip you for something beautiful ahead? Lean into His teaching, allow His word to soften your heart, and trust the perfect outcome He is crafting in you.
