“Therefore, since we are receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken, let us be thankful, and so worship God acceptably with reverence and awe, for our “God is a consuming fire” (Hebrews 12:28-29)  

We spend a massive amount of time and energy building our lives. We invest deeply in our careers, decorate our homes, and try our hardest to secure a comfortable future. Yet, there is a profound truth we often rush past in our daily routines: eventually, all these physical things will fade away. When the dust finally settles on human history, the only things that will truly remain are you and God. The endless desires, stresses, and troubles of this world will simply cease to exist.

This reality brings up a deeply introspective question for all of us: if everything around us is temporary, how should we live our lives right now?

The writer of Hebrews gives us a beautiful answer. He reminds us that since we are receiving a spiritual kingdom that cannot be shaken or removed, we should be a deeply grateful people. We are invited to worship God with reverence and awe, for our God is a consuming fire.

One of the most striking things about calling God a "consuming fire" is how it shifts our perspective. We often think of fire as purely destructive, but fire also purifies. It burns away the temporary, fragile elements so that only the pure, lasting things remain.

In the book of Deuteronomy, we are told that God is a jealous God. At first glance, that might sound harsh, but His jealousy is not like human envy. It is a fierce, protective love. He desires deep, unbroken intimacy with you. The consuming fire of His love wants to clear away the worldly distractions and heavy burdens that keep you from experiencing His presence fully.

Here is a beautiful truth: while we look forward to an eternal future, we do not need to wait until we die to experience this intimate, abundant life. Jesus shared in the gospel of John that eternal life is knowing God (John 17:3). Through Christ, your eternal life has already begun. You can step into this unshakable kingdom right now, right where you are.

Instead of focusing entirely on the heavy, temporary cares of this world, we can actively shift our focus to what will last forever. We can make our lives count by resting in what Jesus has already done for us. As we walk through our days, we are invited to respond with simple, daily gratitude.

The author of Hebrews encourages us to continually offer a sacrifice of praise to God, speaking His name with thankfulness. We are also reminded not to forget to do good and to share with others, because these simple acts of love deeply please Him.

You are a cherished part of an eternal kingdom that will never fall. Let the consuming fire of God's love burn away your temporary worries today. May this truth give you profound peace, encouraging you to share His love, do good, and walk intimately with your Creator.
