“Moses was faithful as a servant in all God’s house, testifying to what would be said in the future. But Christ is faithful as a son over God’s house. And we are his house, if we hold on to our courage and the hope of which we boast” (Hebrews 3:5-6)

It is a beautiful thing to consider that Moses, a faithful servant, dedicated his entire life to a promise he would never see fulfilled. His ministry, overseeing the administration of the Law and leading God's people for forty years, was ultimately a testimony about Christ. Everything the Law spoke of—its standards, its righteousness, its holiness—was a shadow pointing to the substance that is Jesus.

The Law was perfect, but it could not make us perfect. It held up a divine mirror, showing us our inability to meet God's standard. As Paul explained in Galatians, "For if a law had been given that could impart life, then righteousness would certainly have come by the law" (Galatians 3:21b). But that was never its purpose. Instead, the Law did the opposite; it revealed our deep need for a savior. It was a guardian, holding humanity "locked up until faith should be revealed" (Galatians 3:23).

The detailed regulations and impossible standards given through Moses were a prophetic portrait of the Christ who was to come. They showed us that only a perfect, sinless one could fulfill God's holy requirements. Moses's ministry was a faithful testimony about what was coming, a promise revealed in its fullness only when Jesus arrived.

What is truly striking is that so many figures in the Old Testament lived by faith in a promise they looked forward to but never received in their lifetime. Hebrews tells us, "These were all commended for their faith, yet none of them received what had been promised. God had planned something better for us so that only together with us would they be made perfect" (Hebrews 11:39-40). We are the beneficiaries of that "something better." We live on this side of the cross, where the promise has been fulfilled.

Christ: The Faithful Son Over God's House

While Moses was a servant in God's house, Christ is the Son over God's house. Jesus ushered in the New Covenant of grace, which comes to us not by works, but by faith alone. It is a faith placed entirely in what He accomplished by fulfilling the Law on our behalf. He achieved the righteousness that the Law demanded but could never produce in us. Now, anyone who trusts in Him is freely given this righteousness.

This is a truth that echoes throughout the New Testament. Paul makes it incredibly clear: "But now a righteousness from God, apart from law, has been made known... This righteousness from God comes through faith in Jesus Christ to all who believe" (Romans 3:21-22). Through faith, we gain the full revelation of what Moses's testimony was pointing toward all along. He showed us the standard of righteousness; Jesus provides that righteousness for us.

This is the great exchange: "God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God" (2 Corinthians 5:21). When we accept this gift, we become part of God's very own house, and Jesus Himself resides over it as the faithful Son.

We Are His House

Jesus has proven Himself completely trustworthy. He is not just a servant overseeing the New Covenant; He is its master and guarantor. It was sealed with His own blood, and because He lives forever, this promise is eternally secure.

This is why the author of Hebrews encourages us with a powerful statement: "And we are his house, if we hold on to our courage and the hope of which we boast" (Hebrews 3:6). Because we are members of God's house, we can have courage and unwavering hope. We can approach God with confidence, not because of our own faithfulness, but because of His. He who was faithful to God in redeeming us will surely be faithful to keep every promise He has made to us.

The testimony of Moses finds its ultimate fulfillment in Jesus. As long as the Son is over God's house, we can rest securely in His promise. This gives us a firm hope for every situation we face in this life. We know that Jesus is our advocate, one who sympathizes with our weaknesses and helps us in our time of need. We can hold on to our courage, knowing that we are part of something eternal, a house built and secured by the faithful Son.
