“Jesus has been found worthy of greater honor than Moses, just as the builder of a house has greater honor than the house itself. For every house is built by someone, but God is the builder of everything” (Hebrews 3:3-4)

The writer of Hebrews makes a powerful distinction here, one that helps us journey deeper into understanding God's heart. He compares Moses, a faithful servant, to Jesus, the Son. To our modern ears, this might seem straightforward. But for the original audience, placing anyone above Moses was a monumental claim. Moses was the mediator of the Law, the leader who guided God's people. He was a foundational part of the "house" of Israel.

Yet, the author offers a simple, profound truth: the one who builds the house deserves more honor than the house itself. Moses was a faithful and vital part of the structure, but Jesus is the architect. Everything the Law and prophets spoke of was a blueprint pointing to Him. He is the very Word of God, the plan for redemption from the beginning of time. Understanding this helps us see the surpassing glory of the new covenant He established.

God's Unbreakable Promises

God has always been a God of covenants. Throughout scripture, we see Him initiating promises with His people. What is so beautiful about these covenants is that they have always been started by God and built upon His own faithfulness. They were never dependent on human perfection.

Think of Abraham. God came to him with an astounding promise: his descendants would be as numerous as the stars, and he would inherit a great land. God asked for nothing in return from Abraham except for one thing—belief. The scripture simply says, "Abram believed the LORD, and he credited it to him as righteousness" (Genesis 15:6). Faith in God’s promise was the only requirement.

This is a beautiful picture of how God interacts with humanity. He is the one who makes the promise, He is the one who seals it, and He is the one who stands behind it, never changing His mind. The New Covenant, which Jesus brought, follows this same divine pattern. It is not based on what we can do for God; it is based entirely on what God, in His great love, has done for us.

The seal of this new promise was not an animal sacrifice, but the precious blood of Jesus Himself. Because Jesus now lives forever, He stands as the permanent guarantor of this covenant. This means the promise of grace can never be broken, revoked, or canceled. No matter how dark the world becomes, God will never go back on the covenant of grace He offers us through His Son.

A More Glorious Ministry

Because Jesus is the builder and the guarantor of this lasting covenant, He is truly worthy of far greater honor than Moses. The apostle Paul explored this very idea in his second letter to the Corinthians. He compared the old covenant—the Law "engraved in letters on stone"—to the new covenant of the Spirit. He noted that even the ministry of the Law, which revealed sin and led to death, came with a fading glory. The Israelites couldn't even look at Moses's face.

Then Paul poses a powerful question: if that ministry was glorious, "how much more glorious is the ministry that brings righteousness!" (2 Corinthians 3:9). He concludes that the glory of the old has no glory at all when compared with the "surpassing glory" of the new covenant, which lasts forever.

The Law was like a mirror, designed to show us our need for a savior. It revealed our inability to be perfect on our own. But the grace and truth that came through Jesus Christ show us something far greater: the boundless love and forgiving nature of God. John’s gospel puts it this way: "From the fullness of his grace we have all received one blessing after another. For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ" (John 1:16-17).

This is the incredible news we are invited to embrace. Jesus, the Son, is seated at the right hand of the Father, ensuring that this promise of grace is eternal. He is worthy of all honor and glory because He is the guarantor of a covenant initiated by God, sealed by His own sacrifice, and secured forever. And just like with Abraham, the only requirement to enter into this promise is to believe and accept it. When we do, we too are credited with righteousness, not because of what we have done, but because of our simple faith in the One who has done it all.
