“He was faithful to the one who appointed him, just as Moses was faithful in all God’s house” (Hebrews 3:2)

When the writer of Hebrews compares Jesus to Moses, it would have been a radical, almost jarring, statement for his original Jewish audience. For them, Moses was the greatest of all prophets. He was the one who climbed the mountain, spoke with God, and delivered the Law—the very foundation of their national and spiritual identity. God Himself affirmed Moses’ unique role, saying, "he is faithful in all my house" (Numbers 12:7). Even when the Israelites were hard-hearted and disobedient, Moses remained true to his calling.

So, to say that Jesus was faithful just as Moses was faithful is a profound starting point. The author is drawing a parallel between two of the most significant figures in history, both of whom ushered in a covenant from God. Moses delivered the Law, a system of rules and sacrifices. Jesus delivered grace and truth, a new and better way. As the book of John tells us, "For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ" (John 1:17).

Both men were faithful with what God entrusted to them. But the author of Hebrews wants us to see something more. He is building a bridge from the old to the new to show us that while Moses was a faithful servant in God's house, Jesus is the faithful Son over God's house. Understanding this distinction changes everything.

Two Faithful Stewards, One Better Covenant

The faithfulness of both Moses and Jesus is a beautiful testament to God's unfolding plan. Moses stewarded the old covenant with integrity, leading a difficult and often rebellious people through the desert for forty years. His faithfulness laid the groundwork for what was to come. It was a shadow pointing to a greater reality.

That reality is Jesus. He proved Himself to be a perfectly faithful steward of the new covenant. This covenant isn't based on what we do but entirely on what He did. Jesus, as our Apostle and High Priest, fulfilled every requirement on our behalf. His faithfulness is the bedrock of our hope.

Now, Jesus resides permanently over the house of God, administering this new covenant of grace. His position is not temporary or conditional. It's eternal. God confirmed this with an unbreakable promise, an oath that He would never change His mind: "You are a priest forever" (Hebrews 7:21). Because of this oath, the writer of Hebrews declares that "Jesus has become the guarantor of a better covenant" (Hebrews 7:22).

This is why we are urged to fix our thoughts on Him. Just as Moses was trustworthy with the Law, Jesus is perfectly trustworthy with the grace that saves us. When we grasp the power and permanence of the covenant He guarantees, it brings us into a deeper understanding of grace. This revelation frees us from striving and allows us to rest in the relationship God has called us into. It helps us see that our security doesn't depend on our performance, but on His perfect faithfulness.
