“For this reason, since the day we heard about you, we have not stopped praying for you and asking God to fill you with the knowledge of his will through all spiritual wisdom and understanding.” (Colossians 1:9).

There is a profound power in knowing your God-given calling. When you understand your purpose, you begin to live in a sweet spot of grace and meaning. The apostle Paul knew this intimately. It’s why he often opened his letters with a version of this declaration: “Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God…” (Colossians 1:1)¹. He knew who he was, what he was set apart for, and why he was doing it. This deep sense of calling fueled his tireless labor for the Church.

Knowing this, it’s no surprise what he prayed for the believers in Colossae. The moment he heard about their faith, he began asking God for something specific and powerful:

Second, he prays this knowledge would come through “all spiritual wisdom and understanding.” This isn't just about gaining intellectual information. Let’s look at what these powerful words imply:

• Spiritual: This points to something beyond human reasoning. It’s an insight given by the Holy Spirit, connecting heavenly truths with our earthly reality.

• Wisdom: This is more than just being smart. It’s a broad, full intelligence—like the supreme intelligence of God Himself. It’s the ability to see the true nature of things from His perspective.

• Understanding: This word suggests a flowing together, a deep-seated comprehension where knowledge and insight merge. It's when the "aha" moment of wisdom becomes a practical part of how you think and live.

Paul was praying for them to grasp God’s specific calling to the maximum degree possible. He wanted them to have such a clear insight into their purpose that they could express it and live it out naturally and powerfully. This is a bold prayer, but it reveals a beautiful truth: it’s in this sweet spot of revelation that we are truly enabled to live in the life-changing grace we were called to.

You Are Called and Set Apart

These ancient words were not just for the church in Colossae; they are for you and me today. We, too, are called, set apart, and designed by God with a specific and unique purpose. Discovering this calling is one of the most transformative experiences in the faith journey. When we begin to understand who we are in Him, why we are here, and who we are called to reach, we find that same sweet spot of grace that enables us to walk confidently in our calling.

This is the knowledge that changes things. It gives our lives direction and infuses our daily actions with eternal significance. It transforms our struggles into opportunities for growth and our successes into offerings of praise.
