“He is before all things, and in him all things hold together.” (Colossians 1:17)

If there was ever a verse to bring deep, settled encouragement to a restless heart, this is it. These few words from Paul offer such a profound insight into God’s very nature that my own heart feels a sense of joy every time I read them. Why? Because hope lives in this verse. It’s a powerful reminder that in a world that often feels like it’s falling apart, there is a divine center that holds everything together.

This truth anchors us. It tells us that the universe isn't just a random collection of cosmic dust, and our lives are not a series of disconnected events. Instead, there is a single, powerful, and loving force sustaining it all. That force has a name: Jesus.

The Word That Spoke the World

To grasp the weight of Colossians 1:17, it helps to go back to the beginning. The apostle John gives us a stunning look into the role of Jesus in creation: “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made” (John 1:1-3).

When God spoke creation into existence in Genesis, Jesus was the very Word He spoke. He was the creative agent, the one who performed the act of creation. Every instruction for light to appear, for water to separate from dry ground, for life to spring forth from the earth—it all came into being through the Word released. The Word was Jesus.

Because Jesus is the one who brought everything into existence, it makes perfect sense that He is also the one who holds it all in place. The universe, in all its vastness and complexity, doesn't just run on its own. It consists, coheres, and is held together in Him. From the orbit of the planets to the intricate dance of atoms, all things find their stability and structure in Christ. He is not just the originator; He is the sustainer.

The Word That Spoke Our Redemption

The theme of redemption is woven throughout the entire Bible, from Genesis to Revelation. It’s a story whispered in prophecies, acted out in ceremonies, and declared by prophets. And just as creation was spoken into existence through the Word, our redemption was also spoken into existence through the promise of a Messiah.

Jesus is the fulfillment of every one of those words. He is the creative force behind God’s plan to redeem humanity. All those ancient prophecies and promises took on human form the moment Jesus stepped into our world to save it. The Word became flesh (John 1:14).

This connection is vital. The same one who created the world is the one who redeems it. His authority over creation gives Him the authority to restore it.

Your Redemption Is Held Firmly in Place

This brings us to a beautiful and personal truth: the very same Word that holds the universe together also holds your redemption together. That Word is Jesus. He is the living guarantee of every promise God has made to you.

The writer of Hebrews confirms this powerful reality: “In the past God spoke to our ancestors through the prophets at many times and in various ways, but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed heir of all things, and through whom also he made the universe. The Son is the radiance of God’s glory and the exact representation of his being, sustaining all things by his powerful word” (Hebrews 1:1-3).

Notice the parallel actions: He made the universe, and He provided purification for our sins. Both of these monumental acts—creation and redemption—are sustained by His powerful word. We know this is true because the work is finished. After His resurrection, Jesus "sat down at the right hand of the Majesty in heaven."

This act of sitting down is significant. Just as God rested on the seventh day after creation was complete (Genesis 2:2), Jesus sat down because the work of redemption was complete. It is done. Now, He holds both the universe and our redemption securely in place by His word of power.

This is truly marvelous news. In Jesus, EVERYTHING is held together—the world around you and the hope within you. I pray that you take a few moments today to meditate on this amazing truth. May it penetrate your heart, calm your fears, and cause you to join with all creation in celebrating the one who holds all things together.
