“For by him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things were created by him and for him.” (Colossians 1:16)

Growing up, I remember learning the creation story in Sunday School. The narrative was simple and grand: God spoke, and the world came into being. But a detail that came as a surprise to me later in life was the specific role Jesus played in that moment. The New Testament often sheds new light on Old Testament accounts, and here it reveals a profound truth: Jesus was the very Word that God spoke (John 1:3, Hebrews 1:2). He was the creative agent through whom everything—from the farthest galaxy to the smallest particle—came into existence.

This realization changes everything. It reframes our understanding not just of creation, but of purpose itself. All things were created by Him, but just as importantly, they were created for Him.

Creation: God's Grand Introduction

The universe is God’s way of introducing Himself to us. It speaks a language that transcends words. As the Psalmist wrote, “The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands. Day after day they pour forth speech; night after night they reveal knowledge” (Psalm 19:1-2).

God created a world of breathtaking beauty and extravagance. The sheer scale of the universe, with its billions of galaxies, stretches beyond our wildest imagination. At the same time, the intricate detail in the smallest forms of life points to a Creator of infinite precision and care. God went to such lengths in creation, placing humanity as its crowning jewel, so that we would look at the world around us and know, without a doubt, that there is a Creator (Romans 1:19-20). Creation itself is a testament to His power, wisdom, and glory.

Jesus is Lord Over All He Created

The book of Proverbs offers a beautiful, poetic glimpse into Jesus’s role, personifying wisdom: “I was the craftsman at his side. I was filled with delight day after day, rejoicing always in his presence, rejoicing in his whole world and delighting in mankind” (Proverbs 8:30-31). This paints a picture of joy and purpose in the act of creation.

Because Jesus is the one who created everything, He holds the unique position to redeem everything. Here is a truth that can settle our hearts: the fall of mankind did not catch God by surprise. He knew it would happen, yet He proceeded with His plan of creation because He also had a plan of redemption. Jesus’s willingness to redeem the world He would create was established before time began (1 Peter 1:20; Revelation 13:8). This is the very reason why all things were created not only by Him but also for Him.

This dual role as Creator and Redeemer establishes Jesus’s ultimate authority. He is Lord over all. The book of Revelation captures this reality: “You are worthy, our Lord and God, to receive glory and honor and power, for you created all things, and by your will they were created and have their being” (Revelation 4:11).

Reconciled to God Through Christ

The story doesn't end with a broken creation. The same creative power that brought the world into being was put on display to bring it back to God. Paul explains this master plan: “For God was pleased to have all his fullness dwell in him, and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether things on earth or things in heaven, by making peace through his blood, shed on the cross” (Colossians 1:19-20).

Jesus didn't just reconcile the cosmos; He reconciled you. His sacrifice was personal. It was more than enough to restore you to God’s original purpose for your life. Because of what He has done, Christ can now present you to the Father as perfect, blameless, and free from accusation (Colossians 1:22).

He has done the work of reconciliation, but He extends an invitation for us to participate. He gives us the choice to be reconciled (2 Corinthians 5:18-20). This is the beautiful intersection of His sovereignty and our free will. He has opened the door, and He invites us to walk through it.

I pray that the truth of Jesus as Creator, Lord, and Savior will confirm the quiet voice speaking to your heart. I pray you will choose to be reconciled to God through the person of Jesus and that your life, like all of creation, will become a declaration of His magnificent glory.
