“And he is the head of the body, the church; he is the beginning and the firstborn from among the dead, so that in everything he might have the supremacy.” (Colossians 1:18)

The Church is one of the most beautiful and profound mysteries revealed in the New Testament. It’s not a building or an institution, but an organic, living relationship—a unified body with a single head, Jesus Christ. This body didn't exist before His life, death, and resurrection, but it was always part of God’s master plan for a redeemed humanity. As the head, Jesus gives the Church its life and purpose. As His body, we are called to carry out His mission in the world: the message of reconciliation to the Father.

This concept can be difficult to grasp, yet it's central to our faith. It means we are not just followers of Christ, but extensions of His presence on earth. Our existence as the Church is a direct result of His work, and our purpose is intricately tied to His own.

The Church: An Eternal Plan

To understand the Church, it’s helpful to look back at the first Adam. In the garden, God saw that it was not good for man to be alone and created a suitable helper for him. In a similar way, Jesus, who is called the "second Adam," also has a suitable helper—the Church. Theologian Paul E. Billheimer beautifully illustrates this parallel: just as the first Adam went into a deep sleep, the second Adam went into the “deep sleep” of death. From His wounded side, the Church was born through faith.

This isn't an afterthought or a backup plan. The Church was God's plan from the very beginning. Because we are united with Christ through His Spirit living in us, we share in His story. We have been crucified with Him (Galatians 2:20), buried with Him in baptism (Romans 6:4), and raised to new life, now seated with Him in the heavenly realms (Ephesians 2:6). This is possible only because we have our origin and existence in Him.

For ages, this was a hidden truth. Paul calls it “the mystery that has been kept hidden for ages and generations, but is now disclosed to the saints” (Colossians 1:26). What is this glorious mystery? He reveals it in the next verse: “Christ in you, the hope of glory” (Colossians 1:27).

It is Christ living in you that makes you a part of His global, living Church. It is Christ in you who empowers you to fulfill His mission of reconciliation. He has delegated His authority to the Church to operate in this world as He would. We are His hands and feet, described as “the fullness of him who fills everything in every way” (Ephesians 1:23).

Supremacy in Everything

The verse also declares that Jesus is "the beginning and the firstborn from among the dead." This is a title of supreme honor and authority. While others were raised from the dead in the Old and New Testaments, they eventually died again. Jesus was the first to rise from the dead to a permanent, glorified life at the Father’s right hand.

His resurrection wasn’t just a personal victory; it was the birth of a new creation. As the "firstborn from the dead," He blazed a trail that countless believers would follow. Yet, He always holds the place of preeminence.

This title is one of three "firstborn" declarations given to Jesus in the New Testament:

1. He is the firstborn over all creation (Colossians 1:15), signifying His authority as Creator.

2. He is the firstborn from the dead (Colossians 1:18; Revelation 1:5), signifying His authority over death.

3. He is the firstborn among many brethren (Romans 8:29), signifying His headship over the Church.

In every possible realm—creation, resurrection, and redemption—Jesus holds the supreme position. This is the reason Paul can confidently state that "in everything he might have the supremacy." His authority is absolute and all-encompassing.

Today, I pray you receive a fresh revelation of Christ’s complete superiority. May you also understand your vital place in the Church, His body and bride. See the authority you carry as an ambassador for Him in this world. I pray you grasp the divine mystery of the Church and feel empowered by the truth of Christ living in you, ready to bring His message of hope to a hurting world.
