Children Obey, Fathers Encourage—Colossians 3:20-21

Children Obey, Fathers Encourage—Colossians 3:20-21

Written by Juli Camarin
“Children, obey your parents in everything, for this pleases the Lord. Fathers, do not embitter your children, or they will become discouraged.” (Colossians 3:20-21)

There are lessons in life we learn as children that shape the course of our adulthood. Learning to tie our shoes, share our toys, and look both ways before crossing the street are simple building blocks for a functional life. Paul points to another foundational lesson in his letter to the Colossians: obedience. He instructs children to obey their parents in everything, not merely as a rule of the house, but for a higher reason: "for this pleases the Lord."

Sometimes, we need to obey just for the sake of learning how to trust and submit to loving authority. If we can grasp this lesson in the safety of a family, it prepares our hearts for the more complex and difficult lessons of submission to God we will face as adults. This instruction is not a one-way street, however. It is part of a beautiful, reciprocal design for the family, where children honor their parents, and parents, in turn, nurture their children’s spirits.

The First Commandment with a Promise

Paul's instruction here is not an isolated thought. He gives similar, and even more detailed, guidance in his letter to the Ephesians. There, he connects obedience to one of the Ten Commandments, highlighting its unique blessing. “Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. ‘Honor your father and mother’—which is the first commandment with a promise—‘so that it may go well with you and that you may enjoy long life on the earth’” (Ephesians 6:1-3).

This elevates the instruction beyond a simple household rule. Children are called not just to obey, but to honor their parents—to esteem, value, and respect them. The promise attached is one of well-being and longevity. This suggests that a home built on a foundation of mutual honor is a place where life flourishes. It pleases the Lord because it reflects His own design for order, love, and respect within the foundational unit of society. For a child, honoring and obeying their parents becomes a primary way to show gratitude for the gift of family and, ultimately, to worship God.

The Father's Gentle Hand

The responsibility, however, does not rest solely on the children. Paul immediately follows his instruction to children with a crucial command for parents, specifically fathers: “Fathers, do not embitter your children, or they will become discouraged.”

The word "embitter" is a powerful one. It speaks of provoking, irritating, or exasperating a child to the point where their spirit is broken. A parent's role is not to crush a child’s will but to shape their character. The young and adolescent years are a fragile time, and it is vital for a parent’s approach to strengthen character, not break it. This is accomplished by raising children with tenderness in discipline and training them in the instruction of the Lord.

The wise King Solomon observed this principle centuries earlier: “Train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old he will not depart from it” (Proverbs 22:6). This "training" is not about forcing a child into a mold, but about discerning their unique path—their God-given gifts and tendencies—and guiding them along it with wisdom and encouragement. A father who constantly criticizes, shows impatience, or holds impossibly high standards risks embittering his child, leading to discouragement and a sense that they can never please him. In contrast, a father who encourages, affirms, and disciplines with love builds a foundation of confidence and security.

An Invitation to Bless Your Family

Being a parent carries with it an enormous and sometimes overwhelming responsibility. Yet, it is often the small, intentional acts that make the most significant difference. You don’t have to orchestrate grand gestures; you can begin to cultivate this atmosphere of mutual honor and encouragement today.

Intentionally connect with your children. Notice the unique ways they are gifted and be the one to call those gifts out. Spend time validating their personality, their questions, and their dreams. Applaud their efforts and their acts of obedience, reinforcing the joy that comes from a harmonious home.

And for children, of any age, consider how you can honor your parents. It may be through a phone call, a word of thanks, or simply by listening with a respectful heart. May you and your family find the deep blessing that flows from embracing these biblical principles, creating a home that not only thrives but beautifully reflects the heart of God.
